If you birders see a hummingbird that looks to be on steroids, it is a Rivoli's. I suspect that it was blown in to Lake Charles by the strong counterclockwise winds from TS Author.

They are a western species typically found in Arizona, New Mexico, Mexico, in high elevations. Extremely rare vagrant to Louisiana. I was surprised to see one in Calcasieu Parish.

Rivoli's hummingbird (Eugenes fulgens) is a large, colorful hummingbird found in the mountainous Southwest U.S. (Arizona, New Mexico, Texas) and Mexico/Central America, known for its iridescent purple crown and emerald throat in males, and grayish underparts in females. It inhabits pine-oak forests, often near streams, and feeds on nectar and insects, sometimes exhibiting territorial behavior. Formerly called the Magnificent Hummingbird, its name was changed back in 2017.

Very cool

My brother is in that area and was asking me about a weird looking hummingbird that he saw. I wonder if it was one of these? I've never heard of them, freakin' cool!

Most likely if it appeared dark and was the size of a House Sparrow.
