Just curiosity why you feel the way you do

Before my dad bought his Evinrude, he had a Mercury 20HP outboard. It would run great in a barrel of water, but leave the boat ramp and it ran in one direction. You always paddled back.

That thing was a rope start, and had the worst compression I ever saw. It would break your knuckles on the jerk back while trying to pull start it. My dad gave it away to his brother, who in turn gave it away as well. One sorry POS. Again don't care how much others seem to like them, I will never own one.

In contrast, the Evinrude is still smooth to rope start to this day. Cranks with 1/2 a pull. Started using Lucas Synthetic 2 stroke oil in it this year.

That is good money for an evening tournament.
80-100 boats wow that is a lot if they pull that many people in.
Again, probably only 20 boats that would be some strong competition.

Jack Miller’s has been around along time.
I placed in one back in the late 70’s with 2 - 4lb bass off a Kelly’s Plow Jocket Worm.

yeah I’m not buying yet on those numbers but from what I “heard”, take that loosely because I don’t know, a couple 3 pound fish and a limit could win it on any given day. I like those odds better than a full day against people making 50 miles runs to fish they found yesterday

I got left once with mine. My son stepped on the top of the gas tank and broke off the fitting that goes to the top of the tank, cant run without gas. 1 other time I was coming back in and it wouldnt run over 2200 RPMs. Ended up being dirty carbs, ran a can of seafoam through and it's been running like a top ever since.

I have my brother's 70s 9.9 sail drive long shaft electric start. It has maybe 10 hours on it. I might have someone go over it and get it running. I know you can buy the shorter shaft and housing so to use it as a regular outboard. Probably has different gearing also. It's like new.

I had a couple of Johnson Sea Horses that were like vampires. They wouldn’t die, despite my best efforts. I completely re did one before Katrina and it was performing like a beast, cranked every time I turned the key etc. Katrina was only thing that could kill it.

When BPS bought Evinrude they did an inventory of parts etc and something like 30% or more of parts failed their quality control. Surprised they lasted this long. But that said they were damn good reliable motors in their hay day

There’s really nothing to it if you have a couple hours and some hand tools. Spark plug, spray out the carb, and changing the impeller/lower unit oil is all it will need, all on YouTube.
