They bother the hell out of me on bolt actions. It's just something else for me to loose. I like a hinged floorplate the best.

Example number one, shoot a 10 point standing in a thicket. Not sure about shot. Try to shoot again as badly wounded 10 point runs across food plot. Both follow up shots "click". Upon cursing loudly and further inspecting the rifle, it is discovered that the mag release struck rail of stand on recoil and dropped the mag.

The red arse, it gave it to me.

Damn that sucks. My dad rathers the removable mag but I don't care either way. I leave the mag loaded and just remove the round from the chamber before pull it up to the stand, lower it, put it on the 4 wheeler, etc.

I've had the clipazine drop out of my tikka once from the release hitting the side of the stand. Hated em from that day forward.

I hate clipazines on bolt actions. That was the absolute sole solitary thing I didn't like about my tikka.

Thats my favorite part about my Tikka. I just keep a loaded mag wherever I go. No new to keep up loose bullets

Oh, I got him. Crushed both shoulders, but it could have been the difference between a buck and no buck.

I leave my BDL loaded. Just take the round out of the chamber and hold down the next round when advancing the bolt. Again, I like the mags on the abolts, BAR, BPR, etc....

That marlins going to run you about 400. That's a damn fine rifle for not a hell of a lot of money. But as luck would have it, you can get a lot more bang out of 400 dollars.

I reckon so.
I've never needed more though. Not in all my years in Louisiana or Mississippi deer hunting have I had want of more rifle. That would probably hold true throughout the entire Southeast and half the Eastern seaboard.

By far my favorite rifle. I love mine. It's handy as hell, got plenty notches in it, and suprisingly shoots 1" groups (sometimes less) at 100 yards.

Mine's got sentimental value, so I may not be totally objective about it. But its always served me well, and I expect it will serve my kids or grand kids maybe just as well.

As already pointed out... you can definitely get a more powerful rifle for that amount of money. I just have never felt the need for more power though, nor a flatter shooting gun. Not with whitetails anyway.

I think Lever Actions are the best looking guns out there. I have really old Marlin .35 Rem which I started out on. What a fun gun.

To the OP, there is not much difference in a 270 and a 30-06, but if you are looking to compare the two and decide...

270 - Shoots a marginally smaller weight bullet, which makes it travel faster, therefore being a little more accurate(flat) at distances 150-200+.

30-06 - Because of larger lead possibilities (up to 220 grains) it can have more knock down power at distances under 100yds. However, the heavier lead causes the bullet to drop faster and therefore is not quite as accurate.

In short, it depends on what distances you are expecting to shoot at. But, both calibers are very versatile.

As far as the rifle itself, can't go wrong with a Rem 700 or Mossberg ATR100. STAY AWAY from Rem 770. CRAP

hope this helps

I love the lever action 30-30's and would advocate getting one to just about anyone, but If I only have one rifle, I want one I can shoot 25 yards out to 300 yards. The venerable ole 30-30 proves to be a little lacking in the 300 yard range. It's absolutely not an stretch to say that 95% of all the deer I have ever killed could have easily been killed with a 30-30, but a couple of the ones in that 5% just happened to be damn nice deer that I would have had to watch walk away with a 30-30. When buying a deer rifle, I think you need to ask yourself what one rifle can do better then another and choose which one best meets your needs.

This should get things going.

Ahh! The old 30-06 vs 270 win argument! I love this argument! It's a classic and I hope it never gets resolved.
