Mike Lardy has total retriever training. Also you best help can sometimes be had with local pro. Find a retriever club close to you

+1 on the Lardy tapes and a local retriever club those two will help you mold a great dog. Well that and a lot of work.

I read books. Water dog is the Bible. Dokkens retriever training was a good read with lots of pictures. Just stay consistent and work him every day.

Best advice. I joined HRC back in the day and worked with a ton of folks. Not only do you get training partners that become real good friends you can reciprocate with other members on troubleshooting advice, new places to train, ideas on how to train, help with training, and maybe a place to duck hunt.
As for videaos, I started off with Water Dog with my first lab about 30 years ago but have kinda went with my own training since I have been through 5 Labs and running 6.0 at the moment. It works but I am sure there are others mentioned here.

I'm interested in this thread as well. I've got a 3 year golden/lab mix. He is a great dog, minds me well, knows all the basic commands. Will stay for an eternity if I wanted him to. He has a killer natural drive to retrieve. He has never been trained to water retrieve. Well, I have had him retrieve sticks and such in ponds and rivers, but never hard command training. However, I was shooting skeet over a pond one time. The pond had old decoys in it. After he watched me shoot out over the pond a couple times, the next time I shot he took off, yanked a decoy off its anchor, and brought it back to my feet. Ok, sorry for bragging.
Is 3 too late to instill some of these techniques on him? I don't do much duck hunting, but would still love for him to be skilled and do what I want, when I want. He could also "come" better at times. He knows exactly what I mean when I say "come", but sometimes he would rather keep sniffing for a few seconds instead of instantly coming. Any suggestions? TIA

Water Dog is "VERY OUTDATED". Try Smartworks. Very easy to follow. I have been training retriever for over 23 years.
