I dont currently have a boat, but the guys i fish with both have boats. I plan to buy one in a couple years, just a 15' or 16' aluminum to get started. Gotta pay off a couple things before i get another note.

Ive been salt water fishing for a couple years now, but i dont have any saltwater gear.

The most important thing is having places to fish. Start by pond hopping if you can. You can find a used little aluminum flat for a couple hundred dollars. I started out pond hopping in a 10ft flat and a paddle. Then got a trolling motor. Now I have a bass boat and my close friend and fishing partner has a bass boat and a 18 ft flat for marsh fishing.

I want something big enough for me to take in the river, too. Im a huge fan of setting catfish lines. Also, one i can take in the marsh.

Not asking for much, just one boat i can do every type of fishing in

that's a good start, it's like golf clubs, each club has an application and use, over time you will accumulate many, scale back to meet your need, you know you have enough when you see a pile of em stacked in the corner and wonder where they all came from...
same advice on reels and lures...

1656 with around a 25hp motor would be perfect for all those applications. You could literally do anything from pond hop to marsh fish with that rig.

Thats pretty much what i had in mind. I hope to find an old welded aluminum boat with a 20 or so HP motor that will run for a good five years or so for about 3k. Ive been looking on Louisiana sportsman a lot just so i know what to expect once im ready to buy one.

Lake martin looks to only be about 1.4mi x 0.5mi. Is that accurate? Seems like it wouldnt take many boats to fill that mfer up pretty quickly? Chicot is narrow, but its about 4mi long, and there are time when it seems like there are boats every where.

From my experience, a 25hp is great for a 1448 and smaller, but a 16' boat needs a 40 I think.

It's not a big lake. More like a really big pond. The boat traffic doesn't often get that bad in there.

I usually only fish it in the winter time. By summer time the grass and lily pad growth will be so bad it'll almost be unfishable. However, I've had some good frog action on top of that grass in the spring and fall.

Ive been also looking for places to fish off the bank around here just for practice. There a place called poches rv in breaux bridge that has some stocked ponds. Anyone been there? Also, the henderson pontoon bridge, and a little place off i10 in jennings where they have the alligators. And opinions of these? Any other suggestions on places to get my line wet, and learn how to wiggle it?

I've heard of Poches but never been there. The pontoon bridge, I wouldn't waste your time. Don't know the place in Jennings you are talking about. What's the name?

There's some private fishing lakes around here too. But you have to have memberships to them and they are ridiculous expensive. Like $3k-$4k a year if I remember correctly.

The place in jennings is called gator chateau. Right off I10. Looks like a lil park.

Buddy of mine had a 25hp Yammy on a 1656 all weld. Caught more fish out of that boat than any other boat in my life. Sure it wasn't a fast boat but it got us where we needed.

You think 25hp would be ok in the river, though?

A 25hp on a 1448 is enough to handle the river just fine as long as you're smart about it.

Atchafalaya, Red, and Mississippi...

Id rather a 15' or 16'. 1448 seems a little small.
