Recommend a good place to book a free range whitetail hunt. Update pg.3

Ok so me and a few buddies want to schedule a semi guided or non guided whitetail hunt somewhere. We would like to go somewhere where theres a good chance to see and have a opportunity at a 130 class or better buck. We are not looking to hunt a high fence. I've been hunting hard for years with not much luck besides does. My problem is the location I hunt has so much preassure the deer are nocternal and people shoot anything that walks. I'm open to hunting with any weapon. I'd really like to hunt a place where deer tend to have more mass, the width is the least of my worries. For this reason I haven't looked into Texas very much. Any recommendations would be really appreciated. Another option is go hunt public land in Missouri, kentucky, or Iowa. Also if any of you OBers have a prime spot I'd pay for the trip. Sorry for the long post and typos I'm on my phone.

Bump for the weekday crowd. I'm currently in contact with a guy in Missouri for a archery only hunt, but I'm not sure what to look for and what will set apart one place from another.

How much cash we talking? I've seen pics of the deer on giles island..They are huge.

I just looked up the rates and for a 3 day hunt in october or november with bow was around $1800 which is what most cost for a 5 day hunt in Illinois, but if I have that great of a chance and it's that much closer it would almost be worth it. A 5 day bow hunt in Missouri is $700, but room and board isn't included. I understand hunting is hunting so nothing will be guaranteed.

Out of state will cost you an out of state license also...

What's your budget? I have a brother that does some guiding in S Dakota. They kill 150" deer every year. It isn't cheap but I guarantee you would have a blast.

Price point is your biggest consideration...
I've hunted Saskatchewan several times and 130+ is very doable there. Gonna set you back $4,500+ just for the hunt and that doesnt include flights, etc.
In the States I'd look at Kansas, I turkey hunted with Wally Eldridge at Central Kansas Whitetails this past Spring. The place is covered in whitetails and he kills bigguns every year. They averaged 160+ during the muzzleloader week. The man knows what he's doing. I'll be booking a hunt there myself if I get an opportunity.
Regardless of where you choose to hunt you need to book soon. The great outfitters should be booked solid by now. Forget public land, thats a crapshoot..

I didn't think about the license, but that's something I'll have to do. My price range all depends on the location and potential I guess. Like I said I know hunting is hunting, but I'd like a really good chance at a nice buck after hunting south Louisiana my whole life. I've been searching craigslist and there are a lot of places offering, but how do I know what to go with without knowing anyone with experience from that piece of land? They all are going to say big deer blah blah blah. I found one that said 75 percent chance at a opportunity to kill a big deer with bow and 85 percent with rifle in Illinois. It was around $2000 with lodging included. I could spend that for 3 day hunt on giles island that's not far from where I'm located. What's some info on your brother's trips and success rate?

Exactly! I think Giles is your best bet considering license, travel, and chance at getting your dream buck

my uncle has a lease in Kansas.
said he hunts public too (bow) b/c it's that good up there.
pretty pricy out of state license but something I've looked into

I had a friend kill a 124" buck up there on public land. I've considered that. Would just have to do my homework on where to go. Anyone have any experience on Giles island hunting? Last year's storm didn't hurt it with flooding?

Just saw your post and one day I will make a Saskatchewan whitetail hunt, but I can't do it financially right now. I'm going to look into your link. Thanks.

That Kansas hunt is another I'd love to book in the future and will consider, but by the time I purchase license and tags I think it's just out of my price range.

Dont put much stock in these numbers. Opportunity can mean anything from "the hunter had a shot but the deer was out of range" to "we saw a big one cross the road while we were driving back to camp". Kill rate doesnt mean shite if the quality isnt there and many outfitters pad their kill rates substantially.
Get references from successful and unsuccesful hunters. If the outfitter cant provide them then move along to someone else. Dont invest any stock in a reference thats more than one year old. What the outfitter was doing 5 or more years ago doesnt mean crap today.

A 130" buck shouldn't be a problem at Giles. Make sure you are OK with the fine if by chance you shoot a deer that isn't big enough or old enough

Check out McCrae's right outside of San Angelo, Tx.
Ask for Kenney. Free range, lots of big bucs. You will kill.
He's got deals from $600-whatever you wanna spend.
Add $300 for the TX state license.

I don't have success numbers in front of me, but I don't know anyone he has taken that didn't kill a 130" deer. It will run you $4,500 though.

I just checked out their site and for a management buck 3 day hunt will be $3250 plus license and all. I may call to check the dates they have open etc. the only thing that gets me is I could go to Giles island and hunt the same amount of time for cheaper, but I'm open to anywhere.
