Youth model guns are smaller, both barrel and stock, and are therefore lighter weight than full size guns. This reduced weight means they kick like a government mule. If he shoots the .223 good I'd let him stay with that and learn that shot placement is much more important than caliber. When he gets bigger move him up to .30-30, .270 or .30-06.

buy a 7mm-08 instead of a .243

It's growing on me. I bought .243 for both my girls. Is the recoil of the 7mm-08 that much less?

Its a hair more recoil than a .243 but with lot more arse to the bullet. My 9yr old daughter shoots it in a full size ss Tikka. Its damn near the perfect round for kids, due to the fact they'll never be undergunned on any shot a kid would make

When he shoots the 30-30, give him a fun target to shoot. Fill gallon jugs with water so they explode. I find that helps them worry less about recoil in that situation.

This is a great idea, I hadn't thought about that. Thanks!!

This is my concern, he hit a buck opening weekend with good shot placement. We had a decent blood trail for 3-4 hours then it dried up and we never found the deer. I think if he would have had a little more A$$ to the bullet we wouldn't have lost that deer. I'm probably just hung up on losing that deer and overthinking this. I can't stand that we lost a deer....

Recoil charts are great but they ignore a huge factor in felt recoil which is the fit of the gun.

A .308 that fits well will be much more pleasant to shoot than a .243 that doesn't fit at all.

It's really sad that you have to resort to apples/pineapples in these threads.

If you go the route of a 260, 7-08 or 308, I'd recommend using reduced recoil loads. A reduced recoil 308 Win load has less recoil than a full power 243 load. and yes, make sure the stock fits HIM. When he shoots the guns, you, not him, should load the round before each shot. When you're sure he's shooting well and not flinching, load an empty round in the chamber and watch his reaction at the shot. If there's the slightest flinch, you'll both know it.

Let him shoot the 30-30. If he likes it, you're in luck. Tell your wife that he can't handle it and go buy yourself another rifle that you really want. She's not going to be looking at the caliber anyway. And since it's for her baby, you won't have to listen to her near as long as it if was for you. Hope this helps.

I always load it and take it off of safety before he shoot. We have a routine and gun safety is something we live by.

I had not thought about loading an empty round. Thnaks, that's a great idea. The little guy is a hell of a shot, he is way more calm and patient than I ever was as a young hunter. But, I'm definitely gonna test him with a blank round to see if he's pulling.

I had a friend shooting a muzzleloader this weekend and my son wanted to make sure his gun was still sighted in. I have it sighted in 1" low @ 100 yds. He's a pretty good shot for a 5 year old.
