Deer season starts in Ohio on September 25th, and I’m finally ready. I’ve been scouting throughout the Spring and Summer, and me and a buddy found our spot. It’s like having our own private land (zero sign of any other people any time we’ve been out there).

I’m a believer in going further into the woods than other people will, and I think it paid off. There are so many deer sign out here, and we’ve watched at least 11 deer at a time graze in the field below. We’ve also seen at least 5 nice bucks from a distance (and didn’t want to venture closer where they see/smell us.

It wasn’t easy getting to our spot, but we have our system now and can get in/out quietly and without going through their bedding areas. It’s going to be a fun season.

I’m pumped too but at this point in my life I wouldn’t want to sludge through the mud in your pics or float gear and/or an animal in and out. I could do it once a year for a destination hunt but I really like the ground blind I have in a pecan orchard and another overlooking an escarpment that runs down into a lake. Easy in, easy out. Can bring youngins to hunt or my 76 year old FIL.
Great spot for yourself though and kudos for going further then most folks are willing to go, including myself. Luckily here in texas the damn deer are like squirrels are every little spot holds em.

How are they getting equipment to the field to keep it cut?

Great question. This is part of an off-base military property that requires a permit to hunt on. This field connects to another that’s adjacent to the base fence. That fence had a gate where they bring the equipment through to maintain the fields. But those gates are NOT open for hunters and only open when they go in to maintain the fields and cut dead trees.

We went through the river to cut a mile off the normal trek to get our blind and stand out there. We have 2 ways to get there now, 1 cutting across the river and the other just through woods (but a lot longer). Several people hunt about a mile from this spot but so far no one remotely close to us.

It’s nice to have those spots to. I have another blind set up on a friend’s property 5 minutes from my house that is easy in/easy out that my 10-year old daughter wants to watch me hunt. That place will be just for us since my buddy doesn’t hunt. My daughter is excited and was pumped to see deer on the trail camera yesterday.

Mentally, I’m beyond ready for deer season. My work schedule is keeping me from actually getting prepared though. I hunt all public and I need to start scouting and putting out a couple cameras. I also want to build a natural ground blind or 2 to hunt with my crossbow out of.
Most of my excitement for this season is because I’m hoping I’ll have my suppressor, and I started loading my own ammo. I think I’ll get a lot of satisfaction from killing a deer with a bullet I loaded myself.

That sounds pretty awesome. I’m strictly bow hunting up here, but if I head to my friend’s place in Mississippi to hunt, it would be rifle hunting.

Public down here is mostly bow hunting. I spend entirely too much money on those couple weeks for gun season, but damn I love having that rifle in my hands. It’s better than Christmas lol

Hopefully no one walks in on you from the opposite side.

Good luck!

If they do, more power to them. It’s hard work, and it is “public” land. There’s plenty of space so hopefully we don’t get interfered with even if we do get company.

we still have about 4 different areas where that’s the case, but we’re excited about this place.

Some of the bucks. Not world beaters but nice for around here. There’s another at least 10-pointer we didn’t get a pic of.

In La, the "go deep " drag pirogue , unorthadox methods, are all now common. The secret has long been out. Only micro patterning, February scouting, getting in specific buck's head and patterning Joe Blow will put you ahead.
