Awesome dogs... I adopted one about a year ago from the local humane society. He was real skittish at first but has come around to being a great dog. He is probably about 3 or 4. Only downside is he sheds real bad... Anyway I live up north and every year during the winter I have had a mouse/mice in this 125 year old house. Since I have got him, haven't had one. Best vermin preventer ever, puts felines to shame. Csb i know... just wanna give this dog props

Does he eat them or just kills them?

So far no mice this winter... last winter killed 1 at night and left it at floor of my bed. I assume as a trophy or something. I think they know he is around and dont bother coming in. If he eats them I dont know about it and dont want to know about it.

Great temperament. Good with children and friendly with other people and dogs. Will bark when a stranger is at the door, don't know if he is ballzy enough to attack an intruder but he would probably surprise me.

Our first family dog
Dad bought her from a breeder in Grosse Tete for 35.00
She lived 17 years & was awesome til the end

2nd was a “mini” that had papers
She was obviously half mini rat & half weenie dog
The sweetest dog I’ve ever known

3rd is a 3-4 year Old we rescued from the New Iberia Shelter
She’s beautiful & has the most perfect teeth
HW negative, great health, no clue why she was surrendered to the shelter

One of the best breeds IMO

Great to hear... Did you or anyone else reading have any issues with shedding? I understand most dogs shed but this one I have is the worst I have ever seen. I gotta vaccuum and do the laundry a lot more because of it, but i still love him lol

We had a rat terrier as our first family dog. She easily shedded more than the Golden retriever we have now.
If I ever got another small dog it would be a rat terrier. The only negative I found was that they like to bolt any chance they get, which sucks considering they are lighting quick.

The hair is unreal with my parents rat & 2 beagles
Add my Boxer into the mix & it’s everywhere

Never had an issue with ours bolting, the beagle is a different story

Adopted what appears to be a rat terrier/dachshund mix. About a year old, great frikin dog, no shedding issues, biggest issue so far is him wanting to shred everything, distracting him with a ball helps a little, hopefully this improves as the years go by, and he’s as canaille as I’ve ever seen a dog, haha!

mine used to sit in our huge back yard and watch squirrels run from one oak tree to another- She would give them a head start and then tackle them

Is a rat terrier basically the same thing as a feist?

I had a neighbor that had a feist years ago. Fantastic squirrel dog.

I have two. A miniature I inherited about 8 years ago, obviously has chihuahua blood in it to get the small size. Dog is nervous, noisy and basically unpredictable. The other is a 2 year old standard bred and is a great dog, with and on/off switch. Hunts and plays wide open when outside but switches off in the house and chills out with the best of them. I’d recommend a standard to anyone that has a situation that allows the dog outside time daily

LINK

quote:

There has been considerable crossing of Feist dogs, since they are bred primarily for performance as hunting dogs. Feist dogs, as a breed, are what we now call the Rat Terrier. The Rat Terrier is considered the progenitor of, and a specific breed within, the Feist umbrella. Because the word Feist refers to a general type of dog just as hound and terrier refer to a group of breeds, Rat Terriers are still often called feists. The terriers brought to the US in the 1890s from England were crossed with Feist dogs already here in addition to some of the Toy breeds (Toy Fox Terrier, Manchester Terrier and Chihuahua) to develop the feist dogs known today.

I have 2 female dogs that are 1/2 Rat Terrier and 1/2 Cocker Spaniel. Cute little gals and they listen pretty well. They are a little jumpy around small children but otherwise they have been great dogs. They were free!

Shout out to Terri the Terrier. RIP.

Terri was our family Rat terrier. Great family dog. She could jump 6 ft high and was fast as lightning. Never caught a squirrel, but came close hundreds of times. Damn near got over the high fence a few times.

She also survived getting hit by a car once. Came back stronger than ever.
