I went up to a buddies place in Oklahoma last week and killed two birds by 745. One of these Rios were whiter than most merriams being killed. Set up about 150 yds from where they were roosted on a big wheat field. They pitched down to the opposite end of field with a couple hens but couldnt see the DSD strutting Jake, DSD leading hen, nor the DSD laydown hen. Finally got a hen to break loose and head my way. After she did that the Tom's got to where they could see decoys and came in on a string. I shot the strutter over the decoy and then his buddy ran off and he made the mistake of stopping. I have fell in love with this affinity 20ga with handloaded TSS. She and I have become best friends in the last month.

I was in Beckham County this weekend. We killed a bird 1 hour into the first hunt but it was slow after that

Had 2 birds come in at 8:00 and got one. That evening I had a shot at another but there was a deer right behind it and I didn't take the shot.

Gotta be Merriams hybrids if I had to guess with all that white!

Thats awfully far south for any Merriams. Its possible I guess. A buddy of mine killed one that looked just like that two years ago in Texas. He was not near dark enough to be a merriam and his legs wasn't short enough either. The coloring of the tail fan is something a lot of people get caught up on for a merriam. I have killed easterns that were buff colored. Killed Rios that were darker than most easterns. I think it all has to do with genetics. Some deer are darker/lighter than others. I think the same thing happens with turkeys.
