Question about transporting fish for stocking pond

I have a large horse trough that we typically use to move fish for stocking but I wondering about putting something over the top to help with water (and fish) loss from sloshing over the side.
This weekend I am just moving bream from our smaller pond to our large pond but in the next couple of weeks I am picking up a large delivery of catfish.
I have a tarp I could put over the top and then either tie a rope around the trough or use bungee cords.
Any other suggestions?

I don't see anything wrong with your plan. Unless you are hauling 400 miles in the heat they should be perfectly fine.

Depending on the number of fish and size, as well as the length of travel time, you might want to think about oxygenation of the water. Just as a contingency. Small aerator could not hurt. You don't want to have dead loss due to stress and oxygen with a large order if preventable.

Both the transfer between the pond and the transfer from the fish hatchery truck should be less than 30 minutes.

If you have an old sheet of plywood, you could cut it to the same shape but a bit smaller than the horse trough. Set it in the trough after you fill it with water. With it floating around on the top of the water in the trough that might also help the water from sloshing around as much.
Add the tarp on top of the trough and you should be good.

I would suggest a cubic yard tote - I have used that to move fish and as others have suggested add a 12v aerator. just make sure the tote is clean before you add the fish. A horse trough will be tough to move them any distance and keep the water and fish in it even with a cover
