I’m going on my first elk hunt in Colorado this sept and everyone swears by first lite. No doubt it’s good stuff but does anyone know if the basspro “kryvo wool” is the same thing? It says “100% merino wool” under the description. Just curious if anyone has any tips about getting good stuff without breaking the bank? Tia

100% merino wool is where it’s at, there are a lot of gimmicks out there that frat boys and trust fund kids swear by, but it’s not necessary to pay $40 for a pair of socks.

I've never used First Lite, so can't compare it to Bass Pro or Cabela's merino wool products, but I have a pair of Cabela's merino wool socks and I love them. Feet stay dry and warm all hunt. I've worn them multiple days in a row out of laziness and they never stunk.

Good stuff. I don't think you need to have the big name brand stuff to get the same performance. Just look at some of the Ozark Trail products versus Yeti.

Thanks, I’m looking at some stuff on amazon that is “merino wool mid weight base layer” and it’s 1/2 as much as first lite. It’s all highly rated I’m just wanting to make sure I get the right stuff

I’ve gone to all merino wool socks, every day. I have some lightweight ones I wear most days, and the mid-weight are only necessary on the coldest days. I’ve worn the same pair 4 days in a row during turkey season and they didnt stink on the 4th day. It’s some strange sorcery stuff.

Oh, I’ve had Basspro, cabelas, no-name tractor supply, and high-dollar brands. I can’t tell the difference

Make sure it’s 100% merino wool, a bunch of them throw in fillers like polyester

It says “100% all natural superfine 18.5 micron merino wool”

Is that what I need?

If you're looking for merino wool socks, Darn Tough is great. Lifetime warranty. Super durable and comfortable.

As far as quality of different merino baselayers, it's all going to accomplish the same goal as long as its high % merino. The poly fillers are more about durability and feel than tyring to cut corners. My biggest recommendation is to go with a thin wool base layers and then layer on top of that. If you get something too thick as your base layers then you're always going to be a little hot and not as comfortable.

Value wise, REI has their own brand thats a really good value. Im sure Cabela's and Bass Pro has similar. They may not have the same style as the higher end stuff but its all the same and works just as good.

not sure on the first lite but looks like a Sitka-Esque type gear. I am sure it’s good but probably some other great options as well.

I use for mostly backpacking

I wear strictly wool socks hiking and daily and wear multiple times before washing. Darn tough or smart wool. For base layers I have under Armour, Patagonia and smart wool. The smart wool is the softest but my Patagonia and under Armour are the warmest for the same level. I have a set of UA 4.0 that are just too damn hot. Use only on cold nights in the hammock. The poly stuff hold more odor imo.

As far as socks. I shop the closeouts. Backpacking.com, rei, etc.... can usually get pairs for under $10 if you don’t care what they look like.

Look for all this shite on sale, Sierra trading Post is a good place to start. First lite runs their own sales, it's good stuff

did you buy a cheaper bass pro scope for your rifle? dont skimp on the clothing man. First lite is awesome. Their base layers are amazing. You can wear them in 100deg, or 20 deg. You need that merino hiking those hills sweating, so that when you sit up to hunt you dont freeze with the colder weather, because it wicks sweat like nothing you have ever seen

Can't comment of the kryvo...

First lite base layers are great. However my old llano and chama layers would tend to stretch out and lose their shape after extended wear. The shape and fit always return back to normal after a wash.

The new versions this year are blended to give more stretch and hopefully hold their shape during extended wear. My kiln came in a few weeks ago and really like the fit, to me it's a little more fitted than the chama.

Checkout Black Ovis/Camofire for good deals on their merino.

Is this really the same as buying First Lite Merino vs Bass Pro Merino though? A cheaper scope is probably not going to be made of the same materials or with the same tech. 100% Merino is 100% Merino, is it not? Are there different kinds of Merino?

No doubt First Lite clothing is awesome. I checked some out at Dick's last year, but it was a bit more than I was willing to pay at the time. Great stuff, and I would buy FL simply because of their commitment to hunters and conservation.
