Public land mule deer hunt

anybody done one of these or other backpack hunts? How/when did you begin to prepare? Were you successful? If not, what would you do differently?
Everywhere in Texas appears to be a drawn tag hunt but one, Lake Meredith. Planning on doing some scouting in the spring to get the feel of backpack hunting, put a game plan together, then head up during rifle season next fall.
any advice is appreciated!

A good friend and I got in the Western points game about 20 years ago. We’ve both drawn tags and killed some nice animals since then. I’ve gone public and private DIY. Public and private guided.
This past October, I went on a DIY public land Mule Deer Hunt in Wyoming. A poster on a forum told me where to glass from. On day one, I saw around 150 deer. Nothing big. On the afternoon of day two, I saw the same 4x4 for the third time and killed him.
You can backpack if you want, but you don’t have to. If you do, remember that the deer and your camp come out on your back. And the country isn’t flat. You can also do a mix of backpacking and truck camping. Go in for one or two nights. That’ll keep your pack lighter.
Keys: Build points in Colorado along with other states that work for you.
Consider hunting archery season
Get in the shape of your life
Have fun

you're right about archery season, i'm sure it'll cut down on the amount of hunters. i was just concerned with being able to get close enough for a shot since there's no trees and less concealment out there.
definitely doing as much truck camping as possible, only backpacking as much as I need to get to a good spot and wouldn't be over a couple nights.
thanks for the info and resources

Also, go on an antelope hunt. High success rate, lots of fun, and gets you into Western hunting.

Not sure where he’s thinking about, but I’ve been reading up on New Mexico since it’s relatively close and they have an antelope season without a draw.

I’ve been wanting to do this as well. Start with something easier to prepare me for elk

This years hunt got deleted from imgur some how. Anyway, just put a few pics together again. This was also Wyoming.

Just an FYI, a big mule deer is one of the most highly sought trophies in North America and they haven’t done well over the last 30 years. Yes, you can still see big numbers. But nothing like the glory days of years ago as far as trophies go. Meanwhile, elk numbers are on the upswing in most states.

I'm burning 4 points on wy antelope this year, and will likely pull a deer tag as well, since i'll be out there. If anyone wants to lend a hand on a region, I'm all mule deer ears.

The trophy area of Wyoming is the western part of the state. They had a bad winter kill two years ago. Just a down time for Wyoming mule deer, really. It can also be hard to sync your antelope hunt dates with deer dates. You should have a good antelope hunt with four points.

Awesome story. Did you have to apply for the lottery? If so, what is the process?

Planning a Colorado DIY archery trip next year.
Been looking online and there is tons of data out there to digest.
8 hrs reading in and I’m not even close to picking an area yet.
Any learnings are greatly appreciated

Jimjack, do you have Colorado deer points?

I dont have deer points. Ive killed 2 decent montana mountain mule deer with rifle. But im more pissed at elk right now
Planning to do elk OTC archery. Tag is 660.
Ive done rifle in montana and would love to rent a horse in colorado to hunt off of. They are game changers.
At minimum have some contacts up there who hunt draw units that im hoping to get some good starting points off of. May scout in august. Hunt September rut

MTFWP
March 1 application deadline for non-residents. Apply for the General Combo Tag. It's been a 100% draw tag for the last 3 years, meaning you're guaranteed to get the tag. But if applications go up, that could change. Either way the odds are very high that you'll draw.
The general combo gives you access to 70% of the units. You get 1 bull elk tag and 1 deer tag to use on either mule deer or whitetail. You can hunt from 9/1 all the way until the seasons close in order to fill. Archery and rifle.
