Public land duck hunting without a boat?

What are some places for a newbie to check into that are huntable either walking in or by kayak that don’t have hunters right on top of each other?
Had a plan for this morning for my first kayak hunt and going to Big Branch. Got to canoe/kayak launch around 4:40 and there was about 15-20 vehicles already parked there. Not wanting to be right on top of other hunters, I went to my backup plan....that ended up also having a ton of trucks parked on the shoulder of the road where I had hoped to launch. By now its getting close to 5:20 and i just decided to head home instead of struggling to find a spot to setup before daybreak and possibly mess up anybody else’s hunt.
Is the BC spillway worth a trip to check out?

Depends where you are in the state, but just about any "swamp" WMA is going to have some areas you get to by foot and have some shots at wood ducks at least. Joyce, Manchac, PAC, and Atchafalaya Delta are the only ones off the top of my head that you couldn't access on foot, or where foot access might be difficult. There are some that you might get shots at other big ducks, but they will be few and far between, especially down south.
I've duck hunted a handful of WMAs by walking in, but all but one offered only wood ducks for the most part.
As far as hunters being on top of each other--if it has anything more than wood ducks, you will have company. Wood ducks seem to be fine with just about any kind of flooded timber, sloughs, and bayous, which means you can typically get away from people. Big ducks? Not so much, plus if they are there, the hunters will come.

Welcome to the modern age where duck hunting is cool and instagram is king.

Get there earlier so you are first to launch at legal 4am instead of 40 min after legal launch and you may just beat some of those 15-20

This is also very important. No matter where you go, if you have a spot you want to hunt, either make sure no one else wants to hunt there (probably not a good thing), or you get there earlier than everyone else.

Wood ducks are fine with me. What things I should be looking for that would make a particular slough or flooded timber area better than another?

Scout it to see if there are ducks in it

Ha, you got me man. Wood ducks are a funny bunch. I have a few spots I hunt on a couple of different places. None of them consistently have wood ducks on them, for various reasons. It may be wind, it may just be other water around, where they roosted the night before. I don't really have enough data points to tell you either way, but it is different for each hole, slough, and bayou.
I have found them to favor bends on bayous, because they seem to like the fact that they can duck into either side of the curve to hide when they hear something coming down the bank or bayou. But even that isn't true all the time.

I hunted PRWMA in high school and had frequent woody success all walking in. Find a nice Bayou, get in there before sunrise, and perch next to or against a nice sized tree and you’ll hear them come screaming down the bayous at about 15-30 minutes before sunrise

God, I wish this wasnt so true.

Ahh you’re a pretty good ways from what I was going to suggest. It wouldn’t be worth it. I don’t hunt that area so I don’t know any spots, but it’s usually pretty easy to find woodies in a walk in spot. I usually get on google earth and look at the aerial map and try to find pot holes in the woods and then just spend a little time scouting them. I prefer potholes or sloughs with oak trees on the bank. Woodies love acorns and will usually hit those spots when they get up from wherever they roosted.
