Prop Help

I have a 2015, 2104 frontier with a 2015 175hp Suzuki 4 stroke. My prop is a Suzuki 3x16x21.5 R. With 2 people, fishing gear, small ice chest, 3/4 tank fuel and whatever else someone usually has when fishing I can turn around 5100-5300 RPMs and top out around 47-48 mph. The guy I bought the boat said he would turn around the same RPMs but for would do 56-57 mph.
My question is, why isn’t the boat performing like that anymore? And if you have the same boat what size prop are you running?
What are my options? Thanks in advance.

Prop may need to be worked, but what was he basing the 56-57mph off of? Same load or with just him in it? That would make a difference along with him fudging the numbers like everyone does.
Also, If you have a hydraulic jackplate, it's possible you're not running it at the proper prop-to-pad height. How high are you trimming when running?

I have a 2104 with a 200 yammy
- are your speed numbers GPS speeds? Never go off another guys speed. He could have done that with 5 gal of gas and no batteries or gear. I heard that the 175 zuke can run just as fast as my 200 on this hull.
- Do you have a jackplate?
- Where is your cavitation plate (above, at or below water) when on plane
- if your prop numbers are right you are turning a 16" diameter x 21.5 pitch prop? That's crazy big. I know the Suzuki has a lower gear ratio than a yam so you can turn a little bigger prop but I bet you are a little over propped
- what's your motors max rpms?
- are your trim tabs down?
We need this info before proceeding
I turn a 13.75 diameter 19p Yamaha reliance prop. 52-53 with 2-3 people 5900 rpms full gas and gear. 6000 is my max and I can hit it with 1-2 people. I have 4 batteries and a powerpole.
I have a 6" jackplate.

I just had the prop worked. He didn’t mention the load he had to achieve those numbers. I don’t have a jack plate, I had the motor trimmed all the way up.

This may be the issue. Any ol prop guy can really mess up a prop. Are your numbers better or worse sonce he messed with It?
No jackplate doesnt help your situation. I bet your motor is too low

I had it worked by “The Prop Shop” in Lafayette, but it’s the 3rd time that the prop has been worked. The machinist said the prop wasn’t bad. The numbers seem a little worse since I test drive with the guy, we did 40 mph @ 4000 RPMs.

40 mph @ 4000 RPMs
Seems like it's slipping at the top of the rpm range and/or it's too big and you can't reach max rpms. To really conclude anything I would need as many of the questions in my first post answered as best you could.

That motor is rated to turn 6100 rpm's. Is it not turning up because it won't or are you backing off the throttle?
If it's not turning any more you can trim it up, raise the motor on the transom, or take a little off the pitch of the prop.

The speed is gps numbers.
I don’t have a jackplate.
Not sure on the cavitation plate.
Max RPM is 6100.
My trim tabs are up.

56-57 seems pretty fast for a bay boat hull and real world loading with a 175hp....think low 50s is more realistic.

So you need roughly 800 to 1000 rpms with your average load
The following is Assuming your motor is running right and able to achieve 6000 rpms if propped right
Step 1 - your cavitation plate needs to be right above the waterline when on plane. If yours is lower then you need to raise it via jackplate or on transom. IMO you need a jackplate because this height changes with speeds and loads. If its too low raising in transom will help but a jackplate is optimal. Raising a motor thats too low will give you some rpms back.
- step 2 - once your motor height is right then we can talk props. the 16" diameter may be way too big for that motor stealing a lot of your rpms
1" of pitch = roughly 200 rpms. Keeping the same style prop you need to drop pitch to bring up rpms.
If you check suzuki website under 175 boat performance most of the bosts use 14.75x23.
Being worked 3 times it could have been damaged and is now nowhere close to the original 16x21.5 so its throwing off your performance

Right i think the original owner did that with an empty boat. When i test drove mine we has 1/4 gas, ZERO gear. just 2 guys, batteries and trolling motor and i did 56mph. It will never see that again

seapickle knows his stuff when it comes to props. I have the same boat with the 200 Yamaha sho. its on a 12" plate and I have the 20" shaft.
I talked to bo about my performance with my saltwater series 2 prop, and he said leave it how it is. I run 40 mph at 4k rpms and its usually stays that way all up until max speed.
I can run 55-58 with a full tank and 3 people. I've ran it by myself with a half tank and hit 62 mph before. these hulls are very fast for a bay boat.
something seems off on your prop honestly. it should be turning more rpms then what you are getting.

I just spoke to the dealership where the boat is originally from, and they said that every 2104 Frontier with the 175 Suzuki leaves there with a 3x15x23 prop.
