I am in the early stages of talking myself into another boat. I am looking into a new pro drive center console to use mostly for deer hunting and fishing around the house. Possibly the Gar Rodeos also. Has anyone purchased the water-cooled engine and hull? how quiet is it, how is it in shallow water, what about deep water etc.?

I don't know much about them, but I don't love the idea that the you either have to buy one of their hulls designed to work with the engine, or your own hull has to be permanently modified to accommodate the engine. I'd be concerned about swapping the engine for a standard outboard/reselling the hull with the modification but without the engine/etc.

I've seen the Freedom outboards in person as well, but haven't run one. Second-hand info is that they run pretty well in skinny water, but struggle in deeper water.

The exaust is above the water. So it is quieter but not like a normal outboard.

I am pretty sure you can mod a brand new 40hp engine to 50hp for about 10k cheaper than going that tohatsu route.

50 prodrive is the same price as a brand new gator tail and turbo kit that is almost double the hp.

I dont see them taking off on cost alone, it would have made more sense to start with a 90hp power head to me. The 40 is already a proven engine.

Know two ppl that have them and they are already in the shop. The new engine doesn’t take a beating well. New engines don it like to take hits from stumps.

I have a Gatortail 37xd on a 18x54 Gatortail center console. Boat is great and has been very reliable.

the spot i hunt in oklahoma is a big lake but the coves get shallow. my 40 yamaha struggled in those rocks. as far as running open water, I am not looking to go 60 miles an hour. just something that can get me there.

I’d hold off on that new engine until they get the kinks worked out.
