Personally, I'd like to have any new gun owner have to take the mandatory class necessary for concealed carry.

While I think the CC course is good, it isn't necessary for new buyers. The main thing they teach is using good judgment and following the laws, not handling and shooting of handguns. That portion is very small. They just want to make sure everyone has a general competence and that's it.

I think training is essential but I don't think it should be forced on anyone either. I too have been to the range and seen idiots but I still think there is a freedom to choose.

If you've grown up your whole life on a farm and know how to shoot and it is engrained in you, why should you have to prove you know how to use a gun to own one? I agree that training is paramount but it should not be enforced on others.

I think the best solution would be a gun safety course in schools. While some may see this as an extremist view, it has been used in places with success and has prevented firearm accidents over time. While it may offend some parents, imagine if your kid is around another kid that doesn't know firearms safety. If this kid had been taught in school, even if his or her parents hate guns, the kid will have a basic knowledge and know exactly what it does.

Some poster here said when he was little his dad took him out and shot a watermelon with a hollow point. The depiction of that is enough for kids to realize the power firearms possess. Without that, how is a kid supposed to know? Firearms should not be taboo.

I agree with everything you said. Everything.

My idea of the CHL course being a requirement was simply an idea of a start. I do like the idea of gun safety in school. Hell, we have driver's ed, why not gun safety?

As for the comment about "growing up on the farm" -- you realize that is a VERY small segment of the country, right? Hell, you can make the same argument, "I started driving on the farm when I was 12, why do I need to take driver's ed?"

And where, I didn't grow up on the farm, I did grow up in a military family. Gun Safety was taught at a very early age. But I too, am a small segment of the population.

In 2010 - over 600 people died from accidental shootings. That is far more than any gun-toting crazy carrying an AR with any amount of ammo.

If congress wants to improve gun laws, improve the safety and awareness of both gun owners and non-gun owners alike.

Or, we can just have more of these.

Definitely agree.

I guess I was just using it as an example to say formal training isn't always a necessity since some families teach firearm etiquette from a young age. You being in a military family and my dad being an avid hunter have kept us competent whereas those not around firearms may need a formal course. I see where you come from.

That's why I think a classroom gun safety course would be a great start. Families that demonize firearms aren't doing themselves any good. They are just sparking curiosity in the younger ones.

I bet if you broke down those statistics, most of the ADs came from family members with very little firearms background. And if the data suggested other things, I would rethink this statement.

Gun free zones surely stop crazy people.

If congress wants to do something about gun laws, they should enforce the ones on the books. The more they stack in the books the more crap the law abiding citizen has to deal with.

Back in the day when there weren't many gun laws, there weren't nearly as many overnight pyscho celebrities. There is a culture problem out there somewhere but gun laws aren't the answer to the problem because firearms are not the root of the problem.

I agree, bro!

Finish reading the second part of that quote. I know this and say it may be worthless but is a step in the right direction.

All this ban talk is BS

Its all about creating a list of legal gun owners.

To eventually get the guns you must first know where to look.

To know where to look you must first know who has them

To know who has them you must first have a list.

The pendulum swing to the left that the country is going through was planned and at least partially planned as far back as the Reagan years. Don't be fooled....the baby steps O and co. are taking in regards to guns are laying the foundation for eventual confiscation of all guns period. (All legally owned guns anyways. Criminals don't give any respect to laws anyway)

I give zero fux.

BHO's legacy currently resides in his health care bill. There is still an enormous amount of work to be done (there are still legal challenges to the law pending) to meet his 2014 implementation timetable.

He won't be able to concentrate on both ObamaHealthcare and ObamaGuncare simultaneously.

Best part is, if he is bites off more than he can chew, both agendas fail.

That's how it starts. In 50 years, gun ownership by the general population will be a thing of the past.

bullshite. I don't need a made up boating accident to cover up my weapons. I welcome the law to try to take my guns and know many like me. That will NEVER happen. All they can do is make it harder to get. My 19 year old brother asks me once a week if I want to buy a gun from someone he knows. Granted they're most always 9's and 22's but the fact is, they're easy to get. Ill just sell one of my AR's to some idiot for 10k at that point.
