Sorry, poor attempt at humor.
I chuckled. That'd be about right that I torqued the rings down on air lol

Throw away whatever base came with it
Why? I've never seen a problem with it once properly installed.

Vortex Pro Series Rings or Weaver tactical rings.
Make sure u lap any rings you use. Also, why would u cheap out on a very critical part? Spend the money get good rings!

I have CVA Scout 0.35 Whelen with Vortex Crossfire II and I used DNZ one piece rings. Only rings I have used on all my rifles.

DownShift gave good advice w/ the base. Do what he said.
For the past 15 years or so, if they're available, I've exclusively used Burris Signature Zee rings (the ones w/ the plastic inserts). I used to lap scope rings, but that's not needed w/ Zee rings. In addition, they don't mar the scope. When needed, using different inserts allow you to make changes in the scope's point of impact if the scope's run out of internal adjustment. I've had to do that twice. I use a one piece Weaver base or a rail if a Weaver is not available.
I'm not a fan of one piece rings/base. Using good scope rings/base, a quality scope that's been properly installed won't give you problems. I tried a one piece base/rings once but the rings were positioned in a way that didn't allow me to move the scope horizontally to position it properly.
