This city boy has a question for any possum experts on this board.

I have no issue with possums and know that in many ways they can be kind neighbors, but our family has no pets and has had multiple indoor flea infestations this summer.

We just found out that a family of possums is living under the house.

Is it reasonable to assume that they could be the source? Our flea outbreaks tend to start in one of the bathrooms.

I must mention that we also have a crackpot hippie neighbor with multiple untreated dogs and a chicken coop.

And we have had issues with tree rats in the attic (hopefully they are all gone).

I have gotten some pushback for wanting to trap and relocate the possums.

It seems to me worth a try, though. I have read online that they can be a flea reservoir.

What say you?

They say they're good, roasted with orange slices and sweet potatoes.

I would definitely get rid of the following because they offer no value to anything.
Possums,rats, crackhead hippie.

She’s a crackpot, not a crackhead

We would love to relocate her but do not know how to make that happen.

Animal control did make her get rid of a duck she decided to try to domesticate, though.

I had them one time under a house I rented. The culprits were the neighbors 30 cats. I spent beaucoup money trying to rid myself of the fleas. You really don’t want to know what we had to do to get rid of them. Good luck

Is there any way to exert pressure on one’s filthy neighbor?

We have rescued a few baby possums over the years. They are always covered in fleas.

Love or hate, the possums are hosting the fleas the neighbors cats brought over. To dispatch, duke dog proof traps using dry cat food as bait.

For the fleas.. Head to your local feed/hardware/nursery type store. Get a poison mixer that connects to your water hose. Buy bifen at said store, also. I’d recommend the XTS over the IT in this scenario. Yes it’s more but it’s oil based and has a longer residual. The store will tell you how to use the mixer. Spray under the house well and around the exterior, especially if you have bare dirt areas. Repeat in one week once the eggs hatch.

To help with the issue for the future buy Taurus Trio G granules and spread them in your yard. If you’d do that now you would be good until spring.

Good luck!

Opossums are suckers for Hav-a-hart traps. What you do after you catch them is up to you. Drive them miles away and release, or a 22 to the head. But you are disposing of a body either way.

I just trap and release opossums nearby since they don’t hurt anyone and generally eat a lot of bugs. Marshmallows usually work pretty well for the humane traps. I usually just spray them with a water hose these days and chase them off. Keep cat or dog food inside and don’t leave it out.

Possums aren't all bad. Studies have shown they can eat up to 5,000 ticks per DAY.

That number sounds unrealistic until you compare it to the fact that a bat can eat up to 11 trillion mosquitos in a single night.

Then why do they always seem to be infested with ticks?

Possums are also turkey and quail nest predators, along with coons, hogs etc. I live on a farm and hunt turkeys so possums don’t see me but once.
