I'm going on vacation here for a week and taking my boat and docking at the rental on the bay. Never been here but curious if anyone has ever fished the area.
Any advice would be appreciated.

We are looking at going next year, report back on how it is. 30A is a nightmare now except in mid to late Oct.

Will definitely give reviews. I've had friends go there for vacation and gave rave reviews for the vacation part. None took a boat however.

During scallop season? If so, get out of the boat and harvest them.

Unfortunately it won't be. Scallop season for the bay doesn't open until August 15

In St Joe Bay, find and fish the edges of the grass pockets in 3-6 feet of water. If you get lucky, you’ll do well with specks, flounder, and the occasional redfish. It really is a crystal clear, beautiful bay if you’re on the side nearest the state park.
All our fishing was done with live bait. Each morning I’d net pinfish, croakers, porgies, and whatever else I could catch.

Very laid back little town. Very relaxing unlike PCB. Enjoy

We go every year, when you going down?
If you have a boat and access to the bay, there are a few good spots you can target. Blacks island in the corner of the bay, grab some z man paddle tails and drift fish the flats around the west and south sides of the island island. Lots of big trout, 20+ inch are pretty common.
Water is crystal clear, I mean bath tub clear. Leave your braid at home for the most part.
Have had good luck around lighthouse bayou and pig island as well. Bring some stuff to surf fish and a crab net. We caught 3 dozen just sitting on the beach, see crab, get crab.

Pig and blacks island were where we would do our best as well. I forgot to add to just be careful when moving spot to spot and cutting across the bay because it gets shallow in a hurry.

I stay in the area every summer. We kayak the east and south east side of the bay and there are many little grass islands loaded with redfish. Sea turtles galore and sharks.

Also if you felt like making a run to the tip of the cape there is a sunken crane close to it. You can get into the kings there for a fun fight.

Get a chart of the bay or use your phone gps, it’s very shallow and easy to get stuck by going in during high tide.
ETA: there’s basically a channel that goes around Blacks Island but it’s very poorly marked and hard to follow. Just go slow the first day or 2.
As said fish the sand holes in the grass flats.
Also, you should look into fishing apalachicola bay which is 15 mins away. Depending on your boat, consider fishing for Triple tail on the bouys and floatsam, they get a ton down there for some reason.

Thanks all. I'm going to be there next week. Boat is big enough to roam so I'll give it all a shot. Snapper doesn't open till the Friday before I leave so I'm a little bummed there.

Friend is working on his retirement home there. Seems like a nice quiet place... but that's all i got, LOL. Looking forward to getting back there to help him out.

Same. We are doing our annual vacation on the Cape but I won’t have a boat with me so it’ll be strictly surf fishing this year. If you land anything nice, be sure to post pics. There can be some massive trout pulled out of the bay.

Have you confirmed the docking. The city docks have not been completed since Michael.

Last time we went in the bay we were praying for trout under 18. We only caught 3 slot all day and kept our 1 over slot. I think we caught about 10 in the 25-30 inch range and 20 just over slot at about 20 or 22 inches.

Tripletail are biting this time of the year. Head towards Apalach on 98 look for the Seafood Landing Park. I fish the St Vincent Sound area. Gotta geaux early as all the guides will hit buoys early. Popping cork with a dead shrimp under it around any float structure.
Its a blast to catch them!!

Fish tacos and hush puppies at Killer Seafood. Do it.
