I am trying to have my pond stocked with bass and blue gill. I have caught a few sacalait and catfish and I was afraid that I had green sunfish. When I took pictures of them though, AI was telling me they were blue gill, but it was just weird to me they had a greenish hue to them, so that’s what I assumed they were. Are there any good tips or identifying a blue gill from others?

Green sunfish have a noticeably larger mouth than a bluegill, often have light blue accents around the face and orange tipped fins. Their body shape is longer/streamlined

Bluegill have a more pan shaped body and a much smaller mouth. Often, stripes are present on bluegill, particular in the juvenile fish.

Overall coloration is usually greener on a green sunfish and then tans, blues and purples on a bluegill, but coloration varies a ton fish to fish and even depending on activity level, water clarity, etc... so it isnt reliable.

Okay thanks! I don’t think I’ve caught any of the sunfish then which is a good sign I’d say. I know I need to cull some fish but I’m not sure how many catfish and blue gill and what size I need to pull. I only seem to catch 2-3 bass at a time so idk if I have a strong bass population to start pulling them or not. It’s a half acre pond

You shouldn't ever need to cull any bluegill. Let the bass handle that. Catfish may be another story. And if you ever catch any green sunfish, throw those on the bank for the birds.

enjoy the bluegill and catfish. It will be tough to cultivate a strong bass population

Any reason why that is?

I'm sure it's not the correct name, but my dad always called green sunfish goggle eye or warmouth.

probably 2 totally different species

largemouth are apex predators. apex predators tend to spread out and manage their population based on size of territory and quality/quantity of prey. it is a delicate balance made harder in a small pond. if conditions are not ideal they will self-regulate to smaller size and fewer numbers
