Interesting. Is green lumber that much cheaper? I had it in my head that having a portable sawmill on site was not a huge savings over store bought.
It can be significantly cheaper. Doing it yourself is a LOT of work and keeping blades sharp is either time consuming or fairly expensive. Depending on where you’re at and the dawgs SYP can be significantly less expensive. At $4 aa 2x4x8 at HD they’re about $1.15 a board foot. Green SYP is about $.90 a BF around me but you can get it for $.75. Most likely delivered for that price. Price is dependent on the sawyer and how much you want. If you bought 50k board feet you could probably get it around 60 cents a BF

I did not do any kind of analysis but my shop is 26x32 enclosed, it was a small cost to use 2x6 for me. I could certainly see it not paying back on energy alone if you consider the additional lumber and insulation costs. The money might be better spent on nicer windows or a more efficient AC for energy savings in your scenario
Thats is in line with what I have found. Thanks for the advice!
As a side note the house I'm designing is ideal for solar panels on the roof. The cost during construction is significantly less than it is for existing structures. I am going to do it BUT the payback is negligible because GA Power (Southern Company) simply runs roughshod over "competitors"....if 1800 square feet of solar is competing with GA Power LOL. My hope is this changes but I am no confident. If they paid what the Public Service Commission and the courts have told them to pay it would be a no brainer.

Glad to see someone taking that stance. Rough cut lumber can be great stuff.
There is some movement afoot in some areas to allow its use. We had a bill pass in Georgia in 2020 that allowed anyone building a home or a AG structure to use green lumber but it has thus far languished with the governor and is not going to be signed into law.
Georgia was home to some 4500 small lumber producers in 1960. They're currently 184 and almost all of those (maybe all of them) are producing SYP for trusses and pressure treated wood. They have destroyed the sawmill industry in Georgia with building codes written by unelected and mostly unqualified county employees who base their decision making on industry leaders like Georgia Pacific who produce almost every stick of lumber used in construction in the United States.
I have been to several county commissioner meetings in my county trying to convince them to direct the building inspection department to adapt this law which was passed almost unanimously with bipartisan support in our county. So far all I have gotten in return is the stink eye from the building inspection department. They building inspector has the authority to adapt this or any other policy but thus far all I have gotten from them is a verbal approval that I, and just me, can use green lumber IF I can find a professional engineer to sign the design. They nearly had a conniption when I told them I had said engineer on board. They are now trying to crawfish because he is a PE in Georgia but is not "active" (their word) in Georgia. Its a shame that a person has to go through this to do what has been done in this area for hundreds of years and done succesfully. Hard to fight the lumber industry though....most likely all that will ever come from it is they will scrutinize everything I do to the nth degree. We will see.....

I would not build a shop that needs a termite contract. Especially with storms that we get in south Louisiana. I didn’t do the red iron route. I built a 80x105 with 19ft walls and a 24’ peak . 12” Purlins on the roof 8” Purlins on the walls. Truss’s on 20’ centers…. This building is a tank. Legs of building are 5” casing. Central la metal supply “ CLMS “ in Alexandria is the absolute cheapest for sheet metal and Purlins. Ask for Amanda and shoot her your print. She can price it out for you

50x90 with 18x35 offset porch, last 28' is barn area. Trusses are 2 7/8 pipe welded into Howe's with were dropped into 4.5" pipe. If I had it to do over again, the trusses would be 4" square tube 3/16 wall. I spent too much time with the plasma cutter and templates cutting 5 trusses out then welding them. Started life off as a shed above our pond and the view and location grew on us.
