All the information in this thread is pretty damn accurate IMHO. I really like the XD line and the ones I have fired have run well regardless of the ammo fed through it. Glock is tried and true, and although they are not for everyone (including myself), you can't argue with their reliability. THe SW M&P line has gotten some great reviews and while I have never fired one, it seems to be a solid option. I would stay away from the Sigma. Brother had one that simply could not make it through a mag without a hang up and I have heard it's a common problem. As far as Taurus goes, there are just too many other reputable options out there. I have shot some Taurus pistols that impressed me, but in the end it's like having an ugly girlfriend, no matter how good the pussy is, you just can't be proud of her.

9mm vs 40? I say neither, but I understand why you're leaning that direction. I would go 9mm given the two options.

check out the FNH FNP series too, great quality at a bargain. Also, browse bayoushooter.com's classified section for used deals. Here's a decent Glock 22 .40cal LINK I'd offer $400-$450 though because it's a gen 3, not the most recent gen 4. I love mine. Also, don't get a Ruger semi-auto.

I tend to support this sentiment, although I can't really say why. The few that I have shot have all gone bang, so I guess it's a matter of ergonomics, which is a highly subjective matter. Just after shooting a lot of other weapons, the Ruger just doesn't compare. That being said, I will not really speak ill of it, lets just say it isn't for me.

Now that doesn't include the venerable Mk series .22 pistols.

Do not delude yourself into believing that there is one right pistol. You need many and you need them yesterday.
Fwiw I prefer 9mm and .45 to.40, but that's just like my opinion. What I said first was fact.

Beretta 92FS. It was my first pistol and is still my favorite. Simple as hell to use and dependable which is why police and military use it.

A beginner should buy a S&W revolver in .38 special or .357 mag as a first gun with the barrel length appropriate for its most intended purpose. For concealed carry, bedside dresser or car carry, I'd recommend a S&W model 642. For target work, you'll need a much longer barrel.

ETA: eventually you will want a 1911.

Ruger SR9c is what I just bought and really like everything about it. They just came out so probably very few that have them yet.

Not manly to say but this is a pretty gun. I have always liked them. Nickel plated is the shite IMO...

Dude, I say that all the time. "that is one beautiful gun". I have a few in the closet that started with that statement.

It is a great looking gun. I have said 92FS in every pistol thread that has been started and I always catch some shite for it. It's no 1911 or XD but if it's good enough for the U.S. military then it's good enough for me. It was the first handgun I bought so I wanted to learn how to shoot in a smaller caliber (9mm) before I moved up to the big guns but every time I am going out to mess around I still choose it to bring..love that thing.

I love one of these weapons and really like the other, but they do not belong in the same sentence.

I know I was thinking more along the lines of Springfield when I said it. I have a Springfield 1911 Loaded and I get a hard on when I look at it.

No XD but I would like to have one soon.

Not more disturbing than getting an erection while looking at a hunk of stainless steel. A finely crafted, American hunk of stainless steel that is.

Lots of solid advice in here. Of the two caliber options I would choose the 9mm due to the ammo price. If it is your first gun I would suggest getting a full size instead of a compact. JMO
