pirogue building

Got a question. Say if I were to put together a class at my house on how to build a pirogue which takes around 12 hours, would any of ya'll be intersersted in this? If so, it would have to be like a 2 day deal. Cost for everything just to build is around $150 for a one man or two man boat.
What would one be willing to pay to learn this skill? Also, you would keep what you build, so add in that $150. This is a skill I could teach a 12 year old kid, its that easy once you learn the way to lay one out. Of course I would supply all tools needed. I would like to get at least 4 guys per class at a time or more.
Reason I'm asking this is that I am disable now and I will never be able to go back to work that I once did for well over 30 years. In fact, I have to file for SS per my disable insurance company now.
Life sucks when it deals you a bad hand!

My dad does some fiberglass work (built our mudboat) so I have learned from him how to do things but I'm sure some people would love to do this
Hell $150 for a nice pirogue is great

Hey fish, where did you learn to build boats? Are pirogues the only boats you have built?
Reason I'm asking is I've always been interested in wooden boat building, since I was a little kid and would go visit my great uncle. He lived in Morgan City and built wooden boats for a living. Some of the boats were quite large--shrimp boats, lafitte skiffs. It was amazing the things he could do with wood, he built all the furniture in his house. Even though he was in his 40's, he was inducted into the Navy during WWII and sent to the Pacific because of his knowledge on the repair of wooden boats. They would repair PT boats, landing craft, etc. that got all shot up.
The skills that he had is becoming a lost art,not a lot of people around anymore with that knowledge.

if I still lived in LA I'd do it in a heartbeat.
sorry to hear about the disability... But it looks like you're not letting it hold you down. Stay strong brotha.

I would do it, just to learn the skill....and to have a pirogue built in an authentic manner...
you would get some business, but I am not sure the business model that you are proposing would work long-term, though....
IMO, a good approach would be to have two packages...one would be the full two-day build for the handyman type...the other package would be something where you have everything cut out and just have folks come in and help you to assemble the boat while telling them some stories and serving them some cajun food for lunch...basically sell the cajun experience...

It's one of those things about our culture that I'd hate to see die. I have a friend who teaches Ag/Welding and may be interested. Will pass on info.

Check out this guy's website: loup garou
He lives in Santa Maria subdivision in BR and builds mostly strip-built seakayaks and canoes. They are stunning.

You are only going to get about $1200 per month once approved for SS Disability and it is a very long process, likely lasting well over a year.

Learn from one of my uncles many years ago. I had builted my first lafitte skiff at the age of 15. I had built others along with helping a few friends build there shrimping boats.

This would be my selling point. I wouldn't want to do this all the time. Maybe one weekend a month.
Selling a precut package along with maybe a video on how to finish it might work, but shipping would be a killer.
Woodworking skills is a bit of a must. On a scale of 1-10 with 10 as a master builder, I would put the builds at maybe a 5 as long as one knows how to use some power tools or hand tools.

I built 3 pirogues out of plywood and another wooden boat for duck hunting, (gatorbats.com). There is a guy in Sulfur that sells plans and pre-cut ribs and bow/stern pieces. The plans are $25 and the kits are $75 as I recall. The pirogue is pretty easy to build and IMO easy to teach to build. As much as I hate to say it, you may have liability issues with the power tools, just a thought. You may even be able to sell them as decorative pieces, (pirogue bookshelves, ect...good luck.

I would possibly be interested. If you decide not to do the class I would gladly buy one from you, mine is shot.

Wrong. I will get max amount which is $2150. I have no choise on this. Oh, what ever SS pays me, my disable insurance company will make up the difference back up to my normal pay for the rest of my life.
