Choupique technical name is a bowfin. Not a pickerel.
Scientific name is Amia calva. Also called Grinnell by some.

Chain pickerel (Esox niger)and American Pickerel (Esox americanus) are relatives of the Northern Pike.

Ive done a ton of fishing in lake ramsey and have never caught one or know of someone that has caught one. If they were thick at one point, it hasnt been that way for a while.

That's a big jackfish! Used to catch a bunch of them in Caney Creek.

Meh, I like them around. Makes a late February trip fun if the bass aren't biting.

Thousands of tiny bones make them inedible.

Indian Creek full of those evil little bango lure destroyers. They can snap a wooden bango lure in 1/2 like a human snapping a twig.

They are evil sent to destroy my lures.

There are actually like 6 species of these including northern pike, and musky. One of my favorite fish to catch. My best

Musky - not yet
Northern Pike-15 pounds
Chain Pickeral -5 pounds (that’s what you caught)

Grass pickeral - 1pounds I called bar or brown pickeral
red fins pickeral -1 pounds maybe has big red find

Both those two mix breed too but they are typically 10-12 inches maybe to 16 inches and like ditches really shallow inlets etc. Caught them typically on live bait or shinners or plastic jerk baits

I used to throw a broken back minnow right to Lilly pads early am late afternoon or cloudy days and the chain pickerel would knock the paint off if
