Depending on how long the barrel is, the taper of the barrel and how much velocity you are willing to give up you may be able to cut the barrel down to a point where you could safely thread 5/8-24 or 1/2-28. Alternatively, you could get it threaded at 9/16 and get a precision adapter in 5/8-24. Just spitballing possible ideas here.

I'm reading a thread that YHM recommended to a guy to thead in 1/2x28 and use an adapter to get to 5/8x24

I don't know the context of that conversation and I don't understand why YHM would recommend an adapter if you are going to thread it 1/2-28. You may as well just screw a 1/2-28 brake on the 1/2-28 threads since the adapter wont add any strength to the underlying barrel wall with a min. thickness of the minor diameter of the 1/2-28 threads. Maybe the person already had the 5/8-24 muzzle device?
If you really want to test the boundary of how thin you can make the barrel wall between the minor diameter of the threads and bottom of the bore's groove you need to do a material study on the material of you barrel and yield strength. When it comes to explosions and high PSI within 6-24" of your face, I would lean towards the conservative end of the spectrum.

LINKpost 2 is there I read that, granted the gun they we're talking about was a ruger American .243
Yeah I know the physics behind all that . I'm surprised doing this isn't documented anywhere.
Soooo when ate you getting a mill? Haha. I might email class3machining who I've seen advertising.

Hey Prop, did I read that you use Faxon barrels?
I’m building a 6.5 grendel and found one at what I thought was a really good price.
Hoping I got a good one.

That's what he used on mine. He uses some higher end ones as well, but from what everyone has told me, he doesn't use anything that isn't of very good quality.

Thanks guys. Mine is the 18" match.
Pretty pumped about it.

Me too. It's been a little while since I've bought a new rifle, and I think this Grendel is gonna serve me well.

My new favorite round as well. I have an 18” prop made about a year ago. Then I just finished a 12.5” 65 about a month ago. Haven’t shot it yet though.

Will he do partial builds? Like just the upper, barrel, and gas tube and block?
Posted on 9/7/18 at 8:31 am to CarRamrod
I'm sure he'll be along shortly and can answer that

Any chance you have a torque wrench? Pretty easy to do that if you do.
But I’d bet he could easily build you an upper.

I have the gun somewhat put together. No trigger or scope yet and don’t have the gas block or tube but this gun will be pretty light.
I’m going to paint it (yeah, I know) because the lower is bare aluminum and the stock is green. Will start on that today.

I posted a while back with questions about the grendel. Anyway I finished the upper a while back and I love that round. It’s a tack driver.
Just happened to have it in Oklahoma this past weekend when I saw this big boar in the pasture. Dropped him like a pile of shite

you will need a vice as well.
If you have one or access to one everything else is pretty straight forward.
well, let me back up. You need a vice block to hold the upper but those aren't expensive.
