'm bumping my question to the top since I still have some confusion and never saw any answers. I found a step by step on bayou shooter but it appears to be extremely outdated. Any links to information on this or anyone wanna give me a quick run down of what I need to do?

ATF Form 1
ATF Certificate of Compliance
Fingerprints
2 Passport Style Photos
LEO Signature

Am I on the right track? Since the E-File system is down, do you think I should just mail the forms in? Or would it be better to wait for the E-file system to come back up?

There are changes now after July 13th.

Goodbye to LEO signatures

No sure this answers all of your questions, I have a few myself, but I have two cans on the way and will get a new personal trust before I get any more NFA paperwork done.

ETA- if I'm building my next AR with a 16" barrel and good size rail (14-15"), is there any advantage to carbine gas system vs mid length?

How does my cart look for my first build?

Anderson stripped lower ($49.99)
BCM 16" Mid Barrel ($239)
Generic charging handle ($14.99)
Anderson upper w/ FA and dust cover ($69.99)
PSA blem. BCG ($89.99)
PSA Magpul lower build kit inc. stock and buffer tube ($129.99)
Midwest Industries 15" M-lok handguard ($189.95)

With gas block, tube, etc. it comes out to roughly $810 before any sights or glass.

I dig it. I'm getting a Midwest 15" MLOK on my new build as well. Handled one at Prop's shop the other day and it's great. I'd put a better trigger in but that's just me.

What kind of sighting system are you planning on using. Generic charging handle can really stink with some optics setups. Though a generic handle can be upgraded with a tac latch or something similar.

Probably the Magpul MBUS set. For glass i'll either get an Aimpoint PRO or a Strikefire II, depending on how much I want to spend.

You're looking for the stock itself or the RE (tube)?

The A5 tube will accept any milspec stock.

BCM Intermediate RE

I would stay away from that cheap blem PSA BCG. There's no reason not to go with a quality BCG.

Go with a BCM, LMT, Colt, or this guy: Sulzer Arms BCG

I prefer BCM's charging handle. I really do think it adds significant functionality. Although, you likely won't notice it, if you're just shooting dirt.

I also see no reason to get a PSA LPK over a known reputable manufacturer.

Thoughts on the Trijicon MRO?

I'm trying to decide between this and the Vortex Spitfire 3x. I like that the MRO is lightweight and has a good field of view. Battery life is a plus as well. But I like the etched reticle on the spitfire and the 3x magnification if I needed it. But it's about 7oz heavier than the Trijicon and I'm pushing the weight limit I can comfortably handle with this rifle.

Shopping for an optic is worse than clothes shopping. Maybe those with either of these two can chime in on pros/cons.

As I stated earlier, if this is for HD/SD, I see no reason to not go with an Aimpoint ACO or PRO.

I have no experience with the MRO.

I am looking for the RE tube only. I already ordered the spring and buffer becasue I thought i had the tube secured too...but got a call that it was a mis print. I looked at the BCM unit...I skipped it becasue to that I would have to probably get another buffer and would add cost. Also its a 7 position stock...std stocks will fit but wont go in all the way and the way it locks is a little off...so I decided the RE with the 6 slots would be better. I may just have to wait...ill be waiting for a stamp anyway.

The BCM RE is the exact same as the A5 - no need to buy another buffer.

As far as stocks: Do you need the stock to collapse all the way? Personally, I run my stock all the way out, but your mileage may vary.

It doesn't matter if it's 6 or 7 position.

What stock are you using?

The micro might slip into my recs, too, RG, if budget allows and weight is getting to be a concern. From a raw value standpoint, the ACO is a great value at under $400 street price, maybe less with a coupon or sale if you're patient and shop it.

Aimpoint Micro? Absolutely.

I just presumed they were looking for less expensive option hence the ACO rec.

I thought it had a different (lighter) buffer? I dont collapse them all the way either...but with the 7 the last click in passes up the notch to lock it in place. Its petty...but since I had time I was looking for the 6 so it fits 100% as normal.

VID of the 6 vs 7 position

And I found one...man...probably the last one for sale other than the BCM version. Turns out the damn place that made the vid was the one that had it in stock

Not sure on stock yet...im kinda digging the new Danial defense ones but im not sure. Thats last on the list...need to decide on/find the barrel.

Vltor makes 4 or 5 weights for the A5 - there is a similar to range in what is available for regular carbine extensions.

The 7 vs 6 really only comes into play on a fully closed, closed back stock - some will not lock at all (or not fully lock) into the completely collapsed position. With a 6 you're giving up the possibility of swapping for a 7 position stock in the future. But, I'm OCD like that too.
