You are supposed to notify an officer if there is a weapon in your car. Handing him the CCW tells the officer, "I have a gun, and I am a responsible gun owner".

Actually no, it depends on the state. Some states are must inform some are not. In reality there are very few must inform states.

I've for this before on traffic stops. All depends on the vibe I get or circumstances. Usually I just leave it be and advise them to keep their hands away from it while we are conducting business. There have been the occasions of asking if there is a firearm in the vehicle and getting a bad vibe ill ask them if I can remove it an secure it until we are finished.

OP, nobody was trying to infringe on your rights or be an arse. Cop just wanted to take an extra step to ensure he goes home at the end of his shift.

I cant believe some of the more gun friendly states are the only ones that make you notify a cop. I guess that's because in most of the other ones, they have all but prohibited to even own a gun

Is a hatch the same as a trunk?

Maybe, but I don't think legally the cop had the right to go in the console of the OP's vehicle without a warrant, unless OP gave him permission.

But I'm no lawyer.

Seems as though the more effective strategy would be to just ask you to step out the car to ensure you can't reach the gun. I guess it depends on the area though.

I wonder how many shoot outs have occurred during a traffic stop between the cops and a CCW holder?

I weighed the options...

Drive an SUV and break even on the gas reimbursement or drive a mid sized sedan and make about $1800 extra per year just in gas reimbursement.

I chose the latter

If he knows you're carrying, that's probable cause.

Probable cause of what? That he is legally carrying a firearm?
