OB Gardeners- Question Regarding Garden Box Depth

Looking to plant a fall garden, but the dirt around the house is crap since the flood. I think the water washed away all of the top soil and left nothing but hard clay.
I'm going to build a 12' x 12' box with a two dividers in the middle. Planned on using 2x12s.. Will 12" be deep enough to support a few bell peppers, tomatoes, broccoli, etc? ?
TIA

Yes.

Yes 12" is fine. However at 12x12 you may have issues getting access to your vegetables on the interior. Picking pests and weeds will be a pain. Are you doing a s/f grid for planting? If so run some string on your grid to help balance your planting.

Never even thought about that. Will probably go with two 12' x 6' boxes instead of a 12' x 12'.
Thanks.
Thanks.

I would go with three 12x4 boxes. It's harder than you think to reach the middle.

I would break the ground up before adding the soil to the raised bed. You would be amazed how deep roots go, and once they hit the compacted "lawn soil" they won't go any deeper. I would do some type of double digging or use a broadfork to break the compaction layer prior to adding the soil for the raised bed.

Do 12'x4' - it's the best size to reach everything without stepping into the bed.
After 3-4 years your plants roots will have gone deep enough to break up the clay below ground.
Or you can dig up the inside of the box now to allow deeper roots right away. Dig out a trench along the short side, dump compost in hole, dig out the next row and just dump it in the first trench, continue until you finish the box. I add lots of compost to start.

I have (4) 4'x 8'and 10" deep beds. I can grow anything. 12" is plenty.

12" is deep enough. I have several different sizes LxW.
I used 12' 2"x12". Can made 10'x 2', 8'x4', 4'x4' ,3'x3'. I find there is less waste of wood using 12' pieces.
I plant all kinds different type of beans, squash, tomatoes, peppers, even sweet potatoes and okra. All in 12" deep boxes.

I had 8 " deep I used for 20 years with no problems.
12" is more than enough.
I would not make them more than 4' wide.
I have 2- 12' x 5' and 2- 12' x 4'. I regret the 5' wide beds.

12" is plenty deep enough. 4' x 8' x 12" will take a full yard of soil with a couple inches to spare once it's packed in a little, and 4' seems to be a good size to reach across.

Plenty deep. I've had great gardens at 6" deep with a weed barrier on the bottom. I've transitioned to 10" deep with no barrier and I can grow anything except tubers greater than 10"
