Gents,
Will be hunting on public land -O’Keefe WMA - in north MS next week with this Arctic blast headed in. Have my amigo coming in from CO and we’re trying to get info on if rut is on or already past and any experience in that area with deer movement in such cold temps. Thank you in advance.

Rut is winding down if not over at this point (at least at my place in north central MS).

10-4; when does secondary rut kick in around you? We’ll be outside of Clarksdale.

It’s admittedly been about 25 years since I lived up that way while in school and a lot may have changed. However with the weather coming screw a deer go get in the brake and shoot ducks. Deer hunt in pm would be a bonus.

Just hope that you don’t get caught in a Delta ice storm. The rest will be gravy. Deer should move well right before the front hits and the first afternoon that the temp gets above freezing. Hunt food sources.

I’m locked in on Tues-Sat next week due to buddy’s schedule…I’m thinking we scout / hang stands Tuesday and hunt Wed on. As I get older, sitting in Antarctic temps for deer has me looking like Ralphie from Christmas Story.

Our place is about 30 miles northeast of O'Keefe WMA and agree with the earlier comment on the rut winding down. Have seen a couple of scrapes being refreshed in the last few days and this weekend had a young 6-pointer harassing does on a food plot.

Good luck on your hunt - bring some warm clothes!!

Appreciate it and info! Enjoy hunting there but definitely latest I’ve ever hunted there. With the mgmt program in place (16” inside/20” main beams) always chance a good buck will saunter by.

The delta has the earliest rut in the state, estimated peak around first week of December. You may see some secondary chasing with does coming back in right now, but my arse would be near some kind of food source hunting a post rut pattern, they’ll either be there to eat or to check it eventually. MS WMAs typically have well established food plots that aren’t hard to locate, for better or worse on public land.

10-4; OKeefe doesnt have food plots per se; they have soybean/corn fields that are leased out to farmers but all will be picked clean by now. Appreciate info on rut. Lord willing, I’ll get up there for rut Dec 2024
