Come fish with me, I will be glad to enlighten you.
And as far as the bait being good for beginers it is essentially a cast a reel bait. Of course working the bait with some extra action helps but you can catch plenty on a reel staright in approach.

Remember, it was like um, just my opinion man.

I know just an opinion.
I know of a few other guys that think spinnerbaits are a go to bait for much of the year. Especially when the water is warm enough to have active fish. :cough: KVD
But to each his own.

I will just tell you this: Good luck at TB, Rayborn, Indian Creek...hell any southern resevoir with clear water. It's pretty much a waste of time to throw a spinnerbait after May and before October.

I'm a big spinnerbait fan. Especially in the summer. I can pretty much catch a limit every time I go to the marsh on spinnerbaits.
That may be a different story, but here in south LA the bass love them in the summer.

The OP is kayak fishing a bayou in south Louisiana. They are not exactly known for their clear water.
FWIW though, if you know how to fish a spinner bait in clear water in the summer and early fall it can be deadly but there are better patterns.
(I would not use a 3/8 oz H&H in that situation.)And a black spinner with a big colorado blade is a deadly night fishing bait for the middle of the summer. THUMP THUMP THUMP THUMP THUMP .... BANG!

Never Ever leave home without...
1. A Yellow Beetle Spin
2. A Black Beetle Spin
3. see above.....
of course sized to the fish you are chasing

Seriously Alx, try this
Take a 1/2 oz to 1 oz R bend willow leaf spinnerbait that has a nice fat head profile and a long hook. Then add additional rubbercore weight to get it up to 1.5-2 oz. Remove the teaser blade in front and down size the main blade by 1-2 sizes in a silver willow leaf or wedge blade. Go with the most natural color scheme you can find with shad/white/tanslucent colors.
Cast out and let it sink to the bottom in 15-25 ft of water. Rip it off the bottom with a quick twitch of the rod 2-3 ft and then slowly pull it either along the outside edge of a grass bed, or through submerged timber. Rip if free of grass if it hits and pause drop and rip if it hits wood.
I like flouro for this as it sinks and you can go with smaller diameter to help keep the bait in the correct depth range and the lack of stretch makes feeling and setting the hook easiser. I usually use a fast tip MH 7 ft rod. I also use a little spray attractatant every 2-3 casts.
It is not my first go to tactic in mid summer but it is a good way to cover a little more water and will certainly produce even in lakes with 10-15 ft visibility.

Yeah, our beginner is going to excel at that
Posted on 4/12/11 at 1:50 pm to AlxTgr
Our beginner should be able to excel at using a H&H in a south Louisisana bayou with the hooks turned up as I suggested, even if all he does is cast it out on a zebco 33 rod and reel combo and reel it straight in.
If you cant succeed with the same circumstances you need to stop bass fishing.
