If that's all you're willing to spend, then just stick to what you know. Sorry for the tough love.

Interesting. I will try this.

seriously, on bait I always try this time of year is a watermelon red brush hog with an 1/8th oz sinker. Usually a 2/0 - 3/0 hook. 12-14 pound test line.
Should have money left for the Nasty Nats.

1/4 ounce white willow leaf spinnerbait is a good bait too b/c it comes through cover easily. For a beginner, not getting hung up every cast is important. I'd also recommend a 5 inch senko in any color texas rigged without a weight. It can be fished slowly near the bottom or faster near the surface with a more erratic action. Either way, it's money.

Coon, if you are going to be fishing the bayou, get you some white humdinger spinnerbaits with willow leaf blades. A pack of watermelon seed baby brush hogs with a pack of 2-0 hooks. If the bass miss the spinnerbait, immediately throw the brush hog, M-O-N-E-Y! The bass are starting to turn on in the bayou now, too bad the crawfish aren't.

GO with a baby brush hog either watermelon or june bug. Get a 3/0 hook and a pack of bullet weights. Hook through the mouth and out through the stomach.

throw in one or two H&H double colorado blade spinner baits in white and yellow/black.
my favorite spinner of all-time.

I would go with culprit red shad, fire&ice, or a pumpkinseed color worm, with 3/0 offset shank hook, and 1/8 bullet weights, texas rigged.
If the water is murky, go with the red shad or fire&ice.
also a spinnerbait or rattletrap is good for murky water b/c it generates noise and the flash of the blades is noticeable.
With it really warming up, a spinnerbait can be very affective because during spawning season, bass are very agressive and more likely to attack something that is flashy and generating noise.
Fish the worm around areas of underwater tree cover, sharp embankments, underwater stream beds, or rocky slopes. Let the worm sink to bottom, then slowly play your rod tip upwards and reel while letting it down to keep your line tight.
Fish spinnerbait around areas of running water, or somewhere where a ditch or stream is running into the lake, or around standing trees in the shade.

It still sets me back when I see them for nearly $2 now. I used to buy them all the time for 89 cents.

Spinnerbaits.
Wal-Mart usually carries Humdingers. I'd recommend them in Blue/White/Chartreuse or any combination of those colors.
Worms are a little bit tougher to fish with for beginners, but if you want to start with them I'd start with June Bug or Red Shad colors, in either Zoom Trick Worms or Zoom U Tails. 2/0 Hooks.
Buzzbaits work well and are easy to use. Mainly early am and late evening.

Throw a few pointed wooden toothpicks in your gear too and a pair of needle nose pliers with cutters on them.

Huge fan of the spinnerbait, but for a beginner, unless he is fishing dirty water, I would not recommend the spinnerbait from April through September. May be why some here have never caught a fish on one.

WTF? Spinnerbaits are GREAT baits when the water is warm/hot and fish are active.
