New Leupold Scope with CDS ZL

I just bought a new rifle and along with a Leupold VX3 HD 3.5x10x40 scope with CDS ZL.
I decided on this scope after reading several good reviews, but I guess I didn’t read up enough on the CDS ZL feature.
The gun shop bore sighted the scope for me, but it looks like they just adjusted the elevation cap and not the turret. Right now it’s sitting on 12.
After looking at some videos on YouTube I see that you want to remove the elevation cap and adjust the turret when zeroing in your scope, and then use the cap when making in field elevation changes.
What would be the best way to try to zero this scope since the CDS ZL cap isn’t set to zero? I was thinking of counting the clicks of the cap to zero, remove the cap, and then turn the turret the opposite direction. I’m thinking this should get me fairly close to where it was bore sighted, and I can adjust the turret from there.
Any other suggestions? I honestly don’t see using the CDS ZL much if at all.

Unscrew the two screws and remove the cap. Put the cap back to zero. Tighten the screws.

If the scope is zeroed then you do not want to adjust the turret by turning it any. You just need to loosen the set screws lift the turret completely off and then push it back down with the 0 matched to the index. Don’t twist it while doing it or it will move zero. Tighten set screws and your GTG

Thanks- I guess I was really overthinking it

You need to sight the rifle in anyway. Just take the turret off, sight in normally, reinstall at zero.

How is the glass on the VX-3HD? I have a 308 that needs a new scope. Don’t want to spend $1K+ on a deer rifle.

I haven’t played with it in low light, but the clarity is good.
This is the nicest scope I’ve had- I’ve normally had Burris or Vortex.
Hoping to take it to the range tomorrow to get it sighted in.
