Is it possible to get a decent AR 15 in the $700 range? New preferably but used is also an option. I'm thinking about asking the wife to get me one for Christmas. That is if I can get a decent one to play around with, it will be for plinking, maybe shoot a few hogs, and of course for the apocalypse. What say the almighty outdoor board ?

Of course. It would be even easier if you build it yourself. Just buy a complete upper, a stripped lower, a lower parts kit, and a stock and you are set.
Takes a couple of hours to put them together. Instructions on AR15.com and on youtube.
Search the outdoor board history. I started a couple of threads about my experiences building one with another with instructions how to build one.

You can get on for that price for sure. With a little research you could easily build your own or you could just go with the Smith & Wesson M&P Sport. I doesnt have a few things that the more expensive ones do but for what you want it for it will make no difference. I'm tlaking about things like forward assist, dust cover, and contoured barrel...

If you are wanting to spend that much to start with you might as well get a good one.Not trying to knock S&W but I would spend an extra few bucks.I have done spikes builds and there excellent.Id be positive that buying a complete one from them one be a great rifle. Here are the places I have found that usually have the best deals.Palmetto State Armory usually runs a special every month. Last year I got lower receivers for 70 bucks a piece.

If you have no knowledge of the AR system and someone else is buying for you, I would think a build is not for you. It is probably the best bang for your buck though.
The sportster model LINKsounds like a good pick for your money if you have to have it new and quick. If you could go for a slightly used one, check out bayoushooter.com

Bushmaster makes a base model car-15 with a polymer lower and all the bells and whistles the big boys have. Comes with a cheap red dot scope price at Academy is 699 as is Budsgunshop.com

I built a predator ar build. It is a 20" fluted heavy barrel. I used a spikes stripped lower and a daniel defense lower parts kit. I rounded it off with a bushmaster 6 position milspec 6 position stock.
Overall cost is 420 for complete upper, about 80 for a stripped lower, 55 for parts kit and 90 for a stock, though you could really cut on the stock cost. That is under 650 for a very accurate bushmaster predator.
When you order online from out of state, no sales tax. My range takes care of the ffl for me.
Just fyi, I bought all my parts from
gunbuyingclub.com

I asked a whole bunch of questions on this board. I will link them for you. Some will be helpful, some will not.

Anyway, that is the accumulated knowledge I got from the outdoor board as well as my experience with the whole thing.
Honestly, I don't think I would have enjoyed it as much if I had bought one already assembled. I had a very positive experience so far.
The threads are discussing who makes the best ARs. My experience. Any help people here provided. A thread discussing building and helpful hints.
I first saw the remington predator because it was supposed to be a sweet and accurate gun. I then decided to look at bushmaster since they make remington, and sure enough they made a predator as well and you can buy just the upper.
Anyways, look over those threads. I hope they are helpful. You can always bring those threads back to life if you want more discussion on the topic.

Thanks. It looks great. I haven't gotten around to shooting it yet.

Maybe its because I'm lazy, but did you post a pic of the finished product?

Actually the only picture I have is with a somewhat scantily clad female holding the gun.
And no, I will not post that one. I need to take another picture of it.
How do I post it?
Posted on 10/31/11 at 1:42 pm to thetempleowl
Upload it to photobucket or imageshack and copy the url to your post. Or email the scantily clad female version to me and I'll inspect it for the board.

That is a bit of a blurry picture I just took.

By the way, have a nikon 223 scope on the rifle. Also bought from the same place I bought everything else.

No, Spikes has good prices for quality lowers. Just buy the lower from them and your upper from somewhere like Palmetto (that's what I did).

Come on now. If a girl is cool enough to allow me to take a picture, I will be cool enough to not post it. Besides, it is not that revealing.
