I applied for a passport two weeks ago and had it expedited. I sent it on a Friday and got the passport on Thursday. 6 Days.

It was expensive though. $386 if I remember correctly. And yes you do need a passport.

ETA: I could not go to a post office in Memphis. I had to go to the next county so I didn't have to make an appointment.

Canada is pretty strict on entry for people who have any kind of criminal record, even if it's minor too.

They may be strict on others but they love their own home grown criminals.

I recommend Alaska. I've been a couple times and it will blow MT and Jellystone out of the water

You can actually get a passport same day for $160.00 by making an appointment and going into the new orleans passport agency. There's only like 16 places in the country that are actually passport agencies (meaning they make them onsite). New Orleans is one of these. A bit more expensive, but we send people there regularly due to the nature of our business. You have to show proof of needing a passport in that short of a time period though. (simply a hotel booking in another country will work).

I just hiked the Zion narrows. It is an awesome place!

if you are close to the Grand Canyon, you can also swing by Sedona...nice hikes out there. This is the devil's bridge

Spent a day and a half in Sedona before going to the GC this summer, Not enough, that place is cool and incredibly beautiful despite the hippies and the "vortexes"
