2 3/4" 1buck is the ideal load IMO, but any buckshot that you can control well will be fine. Low recoil is the name of the game with a 12. You don't want to be using 3" mag OOO

I would go with a 20 gauge 870.

Sort of on topic, what load should I look for in a 12 gauge home defense shell?

I like #6 or #7 1/2, frankly. (ETA: And I echo 2 3/4" - leave that 3" stuff for the hunters.) At least the first 2 or 3 rounds - so that everybody wakes up and hits the deck. 12 gauge buck just rips through drywall and insulation at household ranges. As long as the target isn't armored, it will hit him like a solid mass of lead, anyway.

You can always have the last couple of rounds be 00, 000 or slug, just to give you somewhere to go in the negotiation.

I second the comment about not shooting 3" Mags in shotgun. I recently purchased a Mossberg 500 tactical pistol grip shotgun. Primary use will be for home defense. Shot some 3" Mag Turkey loads I had laying around the house over the weekend. let me tell you the recoil makes it almost un-shootable. 2-3/4 #4 buckshot works very well and recoil is much more mangeable.

People will debate that but the real right answer is whatever you have. I like 00 buck just because nothing says frick you like 9 lead balls to the face.

But honestly within 10 yards which is probably a good range for most home invasion situations any shotgun load will have pretty good stopping power.
