I have not been seeing much sign or deer on the main place I hunt so I decided after my morning hunt today to go scout out this small 30 acre place I own where hardly anyone has been hunting. Well damn if there isn't sign everywhere. There is a 15 acre field in the middle where a farmer has recently planted oats and you cant take a step without seeing big tracks. Just inside the woods surrounding the field are dozens of huge rubs and scrapes that are very fresh. The rut is close to the peak here in Alabama.

So here is my question: Do I hunt the woods where I am seeing these huge rubs and scrapes or do I hunt the field hoping some does come out this evening and the big buck follows? The woods have very limited visibility but I can cover a ton of ground hunting the field.

I don't have any stand where I can see both the woods and the field. The woods are very thick. It's an either/or in this situation for me.

I'd hunt the woods off the rubs if there's no area where you can hunt both. Good luck.

I used to. Had a really bad scare with one several years ago and refuse to use them now.

Even if I used a climber there is no place on the property where I could see both the field and the woods where the scrapes and rubs are. It really is an either/or situation which is what makes it such a tough call for this evenings hunt.

i'd be cautious to get in the woods and give him a scent of you. especially thick woods. i've gotten burned before.

where are the does feeding? i'd be setting up there. if there are any open areas, does tend to run to them when being chased. edges of woods/fields. are very open places in the woods, if that exists.

There are tons of tracks, big and small, in the field so I would assume there.

Yea this worries me. The scrapes are right under a wooden stand I have in the woods and for me to get a shot on him, he will have to be withing 15 yards. That's getting very close for the kind of old and experienced buck making rubs this big.

I would lean towards the field. If that doesn't work out, them move deeper in the woods.

Hunt the field. Don't try to outsmart him. Let him make a mistake. If he's rutting, he probably will.

This is what I ended up doing. I saw a 2 year old 8 point that walked right under my stand. I let him pass hoping the monster that is rubbing on huge trees would follow him out. It didn't happen but I am still optimistic. I'm gonna try the field again this morning using Tinks 69, grunt calls, and estrous bleat calls.
