I've been searching for a good all purpose 223 round. When I say all purpose I am referring to self defense, coyotes, and hogs. The two rounds I have sort of settled on are Speer Gold Dot 62gr and the Fusion 62gr. The Gold Dots can be had for about 1/2 the price of the Fusions. Anyone have any experience with these or any other suggestions?

If it matters my AR is a 18" 223 Wylde 1:8. I know 223 isn't the best round for a hog, but until I build a 300BO or a 6.5 it's what I have.

I have shot some 150lb hogs with the fusion and dropped hogs in their tracks

Barnes VorTx 5.56. Stan Chen as well although I'd if he makes ammo anymore.

It's a good round....shot placement is always the answer.

I’ve been wanting to try the 70gr Barnes in my Savage bolt action because it likes heavier rounds. The gun is chambered in .223 though and I know you aren’t suppose to shoot 5.56. Is that rule mainly for ARs or should I stay clear?

The Stan Chens have been hard to come by. Found some on Midway few months back. Scooped them babies up. Killed both my bucks this year with em

Gold dots should be just fine for what you're doing. The price gap makes it a far easier choice.

I shoot lots of buffalo bore and have had a few dud .357 rounds. 3 to be exact out of probably 500 rounds. Enough for me to not trust it for self defense

I load my own and they are crazy accurate. Don't know if Barnes offers them as a factory load or not. Give them a call.

Well that is disappointing. Buffalo Bore hardcast bullet was my go to round for my side arm 357 mag while hog hunting.

Have you had any luck with Double tap or Underwood ammo?

No I've never used them. That 180 is the one I deer hunt with and that's the one I had the duds with.

With a double action gun and using it in the woods I wouldn't nearly be nervous to use it. I just dont use their self defense stuff.

I want to thank everyone for the input. I THINK I'm going to go with Barnes VOR-TX in 62gr. I plotted a chart using ballistics data I found and it looks like that is the flattest shooting out of Fusion 62gr, VOR-TX 62gr, and VOR-TX 70gr. I also plotted the 2 bulk FMJ rounds I have (IMI M193 and Armscor 223 63 gr). The flight path of the 62gr VOR-TX almost mimics the Armscor's exactly. I figure the Armscor and 62gr VOR-TX should zero in very closely for plinking purposes.

Here's a link to the charts and graph I created. I used the default ballistic coefficient for the 2 FMJ rounds since I couldn't locate that online.
