Doesn't look like it's been out of the pen for too long

That's a feral hog.

But I'd bet money they caught it years ago, cut it, and have been feeding the hell out of it ever since.

And don't get me wrong, nothing wrong with that. It's a great way to turn a boar into edible meat.

That's awesome

You know... if it's nuts were cut off it could blow up to that big and possibly still be edible. Wouldn't likely have those tusks though

If nuts cut, wouldn't be fighting other boars or barrows - less chance of breaking off tusks.

I take back all the rotten things I said. Thats a huge arse hog. Probably not completly free range though. Was this a high fence operation?

I showed the pics to some experts. Here's what one said.

quote:

That's a crossbred domestic hog that was either released or escaped. It is definately not feral. It is probably a hampshire bred to another crossbred domestic hog or a crossbred bred back to another crossbred. NOT FERAL at all. 2nd generation crossbreds bred back to crossbreds usually get a red and black color. We have a crossbred showpig boar that we bred back to a cross (bluebutt) sow. She had 10 piglets, 3 of which had a red roan and 1 was even a belted red instead of black. Somewhere down the line the pig had duroc genes bred into them. His short snout is very distinct and the ears are domestic. Over the years ear size, depending on breed, has gotten smaller and smaller because the hogs are being bred for a showier, small skulled, type of market hog. Sorry to bust any bubbles, he's just not a feral hog.

Probably just semantics, but if it's out running around living wild, it's feral, no? I guess it's birth circumstances could be in question.

It's about the same as the semantics involved with shooting a 180 Whitetail behind a game fence vs a wild one.

Yes, it's a big whitetail, but it's not the same thing.

Wild hogs do not get that big without major intervention. I hope we get to hear the story on it. But I suspect we won't.

I guess I figured there's enough domestic genes out there from released hogs for this to happen in the wild population. Where I hunt, you see all sorts of colors. All the way from the wild Russion look to mostly white/pink fat-asses that can't have been out long.

Shoot me an email at cworsh4@gmail.com. I have a question (more likely for your friend) about the story that I don't want to ask on here.

We're all family here Stewie. No secrets. Except our identity and location of residence. Other than that we're and open book.

Nice hog regardless and based on the pics it was only shot once in the boiler room.

I agree partialy domesticated and based on pics looks like it was cut but that really doesnt matter if he was hunting open land and had no knowledge of it being released.

BTW that will be a shite load of sausage.

Well, I don't think the admins want journalists spamming the board for story requests...which is what I'm trying to do

Looks like it skinned out too easy also - hogs i've killed over 250 pounds that were feral were very difficult to skin. Basically had to strip the skin off, very thick and tough.

Does seem to have a Yorkshire head on it, some Poland China in that hog too....
