Not sure if this is the right board to ask, my apologies if so. Mississippi apparently recognizes Constitutional Carry. Can someone explain why a concealed carry permit is still required then?

If you never leave Mississippi it probably isn’t, but our permit has reciprocity with most states.
The Enhanced Carry permit gives you the right to carry in some places that are normally off limits to the regular permit.

But then why is there a regular permit?

It is now for reciprocity only. You need it if you want to carry in other states that do no have constitutional carry. As said in state you don’t need it anymore unless you want to carry in the advanced areas but if you travel out of the state then you need the state permit

And if you have the permit you can skip the background check stage when purchasing a gun. Makes for a faster transition.

The regular permit doesn’t require any in-person training, while the enhanced does.
MS is a Shall Issue state, so unless you’ve been in trouble you can just apply and get the regular permit, allowing you to carry across many state lines.

The guy who taught my CHP class is a Mississippi resident, but spends time in Louisiana. He is registered to teach the class to others in Louisiana, but because he is a Mississippi resident, he can't hold a Louisiana CHP himself. If he wants to conceal in Louisiana, he would be required to physically have a permit on him that is issued by his home state that Louisiana would honor.

That's pretty much it in a nutshell.

If you never leave you need a permit of no kind. It’s pretty sweet

This is also true and worth having the permit even if it didn’t include reciprocity if you buy guns even semi-often.

Concealed carry is legal without a permit for anyone who can legally possess a firearm as long as the handgun is carried in a holster or sheath. Mississippi statutes don’t address the minimum age for permitless concealed carry. For reciprocity reasons, two types of permits are still available at the state level: the Standard Firearms Permit (SFP) and an enhanced version (E-SFP), which allows carry in more locations. A permit applicant must be 21 years old (or at least 18 and a member or the military or a veteran) and either be a resident of Mississippi, a non-resident with a valid permit from another state, active duty member of the military stationed in Mississippi or be a retired law enforcement officer establishing residency in the state. The E-SFP requires a firearms training course offered by an instructor certified by the Mississippi Department of Public Safety. In terms of reciprocity, since Mississippi has permitless carry, any person who can legally possess a firearm may carry a concealed firearm on his or her person without a license or permit.
