As a senior I like the idea of an auto deploy and stow and do not like the foot lever and pull up of the Terrova.

Does anyone have experience with the Ulterra auto stow/deploy or the assisted deploy on the Terrova?

And last does the riptide power drive come with assisted deploy?

Not sure how “senior” you are, but I’m about to apply for Medicare, and have no issue deploying or pulling my Terrova Saltwater up (24V, 80# model).

I have a guide buddy that has had his auto deploy Ulterra malfunction a few times, one trip when we were with him, we had to partially disassemble the bracket to fold it down. So I opted for the manual version, and it’s well balanced and hasn’t been a problem.

Go talk to anyone who has an Ulterra and ask them how many times it’s been in and out of shop for repairs. Seems like they have continuous issues. If you want auto deploy and stow I’d spend extra and get the power pole trolling motor or the Minn Kota Instinct

I was on a guide boat where his primary and back up Ulterra were both in shop and he had to borrow an Ulterra from someone else to continue running trips and the borrowed unit then shat the bed during the trip.

Yeah if you want the auto deploy I don’t recommend the Ulterras. You gonna have to pony up for one of those new units. I checked out the new garmin Kracken recently and it looked pretty sweet. Dealer showed me how easy it was to override with a manual pull pin in the case of a failure. I hear the power pole units are suppose to be nice to. I haven’t seen the new Minn Kota units yet.

Do the terrova have something new to assist. I fish with a buddy who has one and hitting the lever and pulling up the head and shaft in anything 1ft seas is a PITA. But his unit might be 2016 if so.

Yes the Ulterra has mech issues and needs repair often. I have had mine for 5 years and have repaired everything on it myself. I would not trade it even with the issues i have had. Longest repair has taken a day after parts arrive. Youtube is your friend when it come to this. Fishing saltwater with kids, tides, rocks etc it is priceless. Man issue is keeping the shaft clean and slick.

I’ve used a 112 lb Ulterra since 2017 with no issues, with some light maintenance. I read that they fixed some of the issues with the original Ulterras with a software update in 2017. My next door neighbor was a little reluctant to go with the Ulterra and went with the Terrova instead. It works great also. Spot Lock is a game changer!

Bought my new to me skeeter w an Ulterra on it. I love while it works, deadly afraid of the day it doesn’t go down or it doesn’t come up . Love the foot pedal and remote controls the newer ones are said to be fool proof. But carry the tools needed to stow if stuck in down position

I am in the same boat, not necessarily senior but very uncomfortable on the bow of a boat putzing with a TM in a swell. I was going with the Ulterra but I have been on 2 different boats where they malfunctioned and it is way more treacherous than my Terrova. Supposedly they have corrected those problems but still a lot of anecdotal evidence of them existing....

I had an ulterra on my bay boat and the auto-deploy belt that lifts the motor out of the water broke. They are nice but they will probably break at some point out on the water, which is not fun.

The Terrova is great and not heavy at all to lift and lower when deploying. If you are worried about weight, it is remarkably light. The Rhodan is heavier, I own one of those currently. I do like the remote and operation of the Rhodan, but both it and the Terrova are great.
