Now that we can unquestionably put in the "advantage" column. Its still readily available and I've been able to find plenty. I could buy more today if I wanted.
You better buy it all bro.

Plan on campaigning for the use of A-10s while squirrel hunting next?

If you could find out how to get me one to try ill post a thread on it. You can have all the squirrel parts you can find.

I still call my 6.5 my deer rifle and this one my road trip rifle. I've just found that its not the totally ridiculous cannon that I've always heard it was. Its damned fun to shoot and is not as destructive as you would instinctively think. Stout bullets at reasonable speeds just truck on through.

Yea, I hate those things. They kick harder than these rifles, and I dont shoot a rifle a dozen times very often.

A big gun is nowhere near necessary for deer, but it is fun. Shooting ducks with 3.5's is not necessary or fun.

Nowhere near a 12ga slug. Since then I've put several 250gr loads through it and they're no worse.

No.

A 12 gauge 1 oz slug at 1500 FPS has 27.0 ft lbs of recoil

225 and 250 gr .338 generates 35.2 and 33.1 ft lbs of recoil energy

Ok, I did.

Eta: well, as much as they let me. Midway had what I had been looking for

Thats a wimp slug. Check this comparison chart. 12ga slug recoil can span the spectrum from reasonable to elephant rifle

LINK

Eta: also of note, slug or steel or buckshot doesn't matter, only payload and speed. Start looking at your duck hunting shells and you'd be surprised at the amount of recoil you're actually dealing with and not noticing. People generally think their rifles kick more because they have terrible shooting form off the bench.

Most people shoot 2 3/4” inch slugs which have considerable lower recoil than a .338

Even those are still stout. They are in the .300 win mag recoil range.

A comment from the chuck hawks article above

quote:

Shooters who would never think of shooting a .416 Rem. Mag. or .450 Nitro Express rifle even once will casually buy a box of 12 gauge, 3-inch Magnum shot shells for hunting season and shoot all 25 shells at a single sitting. It is no wonder flinching (and missing!) is so common.

What's that .338 cannon weigh? That sounds like a good price on a new M70(EW),too.

A hair over 8.5 pounds dressed out (sling, scope, 7 rounds on the stock). Weighed with boga grip.

It carries really well, the balance is perfect. To me, its a perfect rifle.
