Making a prototype
I have an idea for a a few products. How would one go about making the first prototype if one doesn't have the proper equipment?

It depends on the product. You can 3D print it for cheap if you know how to 3D model and how to optimize the design for the production method. If you don't, you can hire a company to prototype it but it ain't cheap. Really just depends on what your are trying to do. The more complicated it is to produce 1x widget in a production setting, the more $$$ the prototype is going to be.

What equipment? Welding machine? Lathe? CNC? If its a machine shop, have different shops build different parts so they dont know what you got going on.

re: Making a prototype
first you get the shape of the desired product made by an artist or graphic designer then you make a cast then they will make a sand mold and pour your metal into it.

oversimplified version

We'll need to know the exact details and dimensions of said products before we can help.
