Look into the CMP program… unless you want a new one.

Is it a cmp rifle? Do you have the owners manual? I think there's a zeroing for dummies thing in there.
Sidenote, the CMP owners manual for the M1 is a cool book to have even if you dont have the rifle

DO NOT fire commercial full power 30-06 ammo in a Garand. You will damage the op rod. You need to purchase Garand specific 30-06 ammo that is downloaded. You have been warned.

CMP has changed their guidance on this. They have an article on their website about it. Most 150gr commercial ammo is safe to use. Surplus ball ammo is hard to get and costs way too much now.

I didn’t. I have a bad habit of doing that.

No, wouldn't run any new commercial ammo that isn't M1 Garand specific. Federal, S&B, and a few others make M1 Garand ammo. I personally reload for mine and it loves 155gr Palmas.

Why not? I believe the CMP article lists some specific commercial loads that are safe. The 150gr stuff is going to use relatively fast powders and port pressure shouldn't be a problem with those.
Either way, an adjustable gas plug is cheap and easy insurance against it. If you aren't shooting matches, there's no reason to not have one.
FWIW, I shoot off the shelf 150gr in mine with the garand gear gas plug. I hunt with it, so M2 ball ammo is a no-go. Handloads I stick to garand specific loads.
Garands are awesome and everybody should own at least one.
Eta: here's a cool study done recently by a SAMMI lab worker guy with some good conversation

Anybody who owns a garand and wants to learn about it can get way deeper than they want into any minor detail on the CMP forum. Those guys are autistic about these rifles. Mines an old battle axe that goes hunting so I don't really jive with all that stuff, but it's a great resource to have handy.

Thanks for all the replys and yes it’s a CMP rifle ! Plan to get a gas plug too. I’ll read up on the sighting procedure but would like some help to set up the sighting .

Yeah, there are commercial products specifically designed for the Garand. I have Federal and Hornady commercial M1 Garand ammo. I wouldn't run just any commercial 150gr load though.

Yes but why bother when you can just run safe ammo or, better yet, load your own? My Garand is an all correct post-War model that was never issued so it is in pristine condition and I intend to keep it that way.

Why? If the port pressure is within the range of what the rifle was designed for, why worry?

Not everyone reloads. Garand specific factory ammo is not common on the shelf and not the most affordable, and is usually FMJ.

It's not just port pressure that is a potential issue but the pressure timing. My thing is is that I read a lot of research on gas flow modeling in military small arms, research where they are finding issues that aren't inherently obvious that are being found as the root causes of parts breaking or abnormal wear, part of why the Army made changes to M855A1. None of that really applies to a Garand but I will err on the side of caution as there could be issues that simply will not be readily apparent until something breaks.
