If this is your first gun get a Ruger LC9. Has lots of safety features and is small enough to conceal. Glocks are for experienced people IMO.

Keeping your finger off the trigger until ready to fire is a good lesson with any gun but if you master this with a Glock, you should be good to go on any gun.

Haven't looked at 1911's at all... What are the main pro/cons to them?
As much as I love 1911s, it would be unreasonable for me to not mention the ups and downs.
Ups: best trigger on the market, ergos are great, feels fantastic, is beautiful, and is the original 45, very heavy = tames 45 well, very slim
Downs: very heavy = not ideal for carry, single action only = carry cocked and locked (if that bothers you), standard grip can print (bobbed grip prevents this)
It's really up to you what you think you would be comfortable carrying, but then again, comfort is the MOST important thing when carrying. If the gun isn't comfortable, you'll start to leave it at home and defeat the purpose of getting the permit.
I agree with Ace in that you seem like you lean 45. If you lean 45, know that every single Glock 45 will be VERY wide. If you have large hands and don't mind a large frame, a Glock .45 of some sort wouldn't be bad for home defense. But again, carrying one is a different story.
If you want to stay 45 but keep it slim, an Officer-sized 1911 or a single stack 45 like a Kahr CW45 or a Springfield XDs would do the job just fine. The round count may be a bit lower, but keep in mind that a CC pistol is a last resort option. This isn't like a duty gun where you would need 15-20 rounds, although this can be done.
I carry a Ruger SR9c almost daily and love it. I also have a Kahr CM9 that pretty comfortable and can be slipped on easily in my waistband.
How much pistol experience do you have?

That's good that you at least have rifle and shotgun experience.
Is a manual safety important to you on a handgun?

I can get you some... But have to keep it at my parents house in LA
Since I live in the glorious city of Washington, D.C.
I keep two shotguns out in VA so I can hunt when I have time and will likely keep whatever handgun I buy there as well

WOAH! Red flag.
This severely limits what you can buy.
Call your local PD to get a list of approved handguns.
EDIT: I know you can buy long guns in neighboring states but I believe a handgun must be purchased in your place of residence.

Aren't there some sort of regulations there?

You have to keep your guns offsite, in another state?
The OB is about to sling a rod.

So you will be purchasing the gun here? And then leaving it in VA?

Not ideal... but it's not worth the risk of a felony or the paperwork / permits from DC Gov't
