I'm buying a used bass boat next week. Test drove it and all. Only thing wrong with it is that the hydraulic jack plate doesn't work so I will be getting a new one. I know there are several kinds out there. Has anyone had good or bad experiences with a specific name brand? Which would you prefer?

It will be going on a Basscat with a 250 Mercury Pro XS if that matters. I would appreciate any feedback. Thanks in advance

Been running Bob's Jack plates for about 11 years now. Never had a problem. There are several good manufacturers to choose from. Bob's has good service and support in my opinion.

The guy I am buying the boat from told me that if I wasn't buying it and he decided to keep it, that he was going to go with Bob's as well. He said that there really isn't much that can break on it. He was or is fishing the FLW series so he has seen and heard many different stories about the jack plates I am sure.

There are plenty of issues that can come up, but they all have those issues. I've owned and ran Bob's and Atlas (regular and micro). The three most common problems are corrosion of the wiring harnesses in saltwater, bad solenoids, and bad relays. All of these things are easy fixes. Other than that, not much breaks on them. Bob's and Atlas both make good products, so go with whatever you get a better deal on.

eta: you also may not need to buy a new jack plate if you can just trouble shoot the one on the boat. They're pretty easy to fix when they go down unless the pump blows up.

Thanks bluemoons. I currently don't have the boat in my possession but I will either this Friday or next. I was just assuming that it needs to be replaced because of the current owner saying so and he fishes a good bit. I'm guessing he has looked into it already but maybe he hasn't. I wouldn't mind a cheaper fix than going buy a brand new one.

He's right. They really are a few heavy duty pieces of stainless.

I've heard about problems with other off brands particularly some with 6" or more set backs. That's a lot of weight and leverage a setback has to handle. Regardless if you find one that is 30%-40% or more under the rest... I would do some checking on that one and make sure you aren't buying a problem. Jack plates are and should be pretty simple.

Good luck.

Roger. He may be right and he'd know better than both of us. All the same, I would at least look into troubleshooting the old one prior to buying a new one. You can rule out problems fairly quickly and easily with a multimeter.

I have a Bobs on my bay boat. Changed my pump recently due to it being mounted in my bilge and totally corroded. It was 13 years old though. 100% saltwater use.

The atlas ones have the pump mounted on the jack plate, so you don't need a place to mount it.

Don't think you'll have an issue with either.

Bobs action jack or Detwiller.
I run a bobs and love it. Bobs comes as a one peice plate up to 14". If you go with Atlas it will be a 6"plate with whatever size spacers to make the offset.

I have an atlas, it’s reliable and fast.

I had a slide master before and it was slow and a POS. Never worked when I needed it to, constantly leaked fluid or blew fuses.

You can’t go wrong with a Bobs or an Atlas

I run a Atlas on my Cat. No real issues.
Make sure whatever you buy comes pre-drilled for a Bass Cat. Most boats/jack plates use 4 bolt holes, Bass Cat has 6.
Atlas does sell a plate exclusive to Bass Cat. You can buy it from Bass Cat as well.
Beware of older Detweiller plates. Parts are impossible

This may be the issue with the one that is on there. It is a Detweiller and could be the reason the current owner says he would go with the Bobs jack plate.

Thanks guys for the input on this topic. It will be very helpful with the decision I make. I'm gonna go with Bobs or Atlas. Guess I will just check out the price difference and decide. Thanks again!
