Buddy has a ‘95 Johnson 130hp, we’ve replaced/rebuilt a lot of the system but still can’t get it to run longer than a minute. Now thinking it’s the stator as it’s about the only thing left.

Any suggestions? He’s tried several shops and nobody seems interested (Front to Back, David Wade, Simons, etc).

Haha, I’m pretty mechanical, but she is a temperamental bitch.

Replaced every fuel line, fuel pump, power pack and still only runs for 30 secs. Figure stator and regulator are only things left. Thoughts or ever come across this?

are you loosing spark? Hook up a spark tester to the coil wires and see if you're losing spark or if you're loosing fuel.

When it first starts up how does it respond when you push the key in to choke it?

Works great on first static choke helps it run and idles strong for 30 seconds. Then just cuts out and dies.

Just ran with 4 spark plug testers and just before it does 2 cylinders stop sparking.

Call me if this doesn’t make sense

Would this be the stator or regulator/rectifier?

You can't blame the shops for not wanting to work on it. The repair bill could easily exceed the value of the engine.

I had a 140 Evinrude (V-4) that I assume is the same basic engine. Actually I had two - bought a second one after reboring two cylinders (on separate occasions) on the original engine.

That has to be one of the worst engines OMC ever designed. When I went to a V-6 Mercury 150 it was a joyous occasion.

After 25 years, your buddy might want to look at upgrading to a newer engine. There are plenty of good used motors out there. Either way, good luck.

Yeah he’s gonna try a new stator and think it’s the last straw. As it had no continuity just now.

I have an F250 and love it even more now that I’ve been working on this one so much.

the timing is probably off. Get a timing light and check that. I ran into similar problems with my 93 merc

Isn’t there a guy in Gonzales, LA that works on older 2 strokes. I think Jerry’s Boat shop is the one I am thinking of. He old school Evinrude guy.

Yes, but be VERY careful with this guy. He used to run a decent operation but he caused some pretty major problems for me and 2 friends (all separate occasions).

Template Marine in French Settlement had a really good OMC mechanic but not sure if he’s still there. I’m sure they’re slammed this time of year.

I know a guy that can get it right and he’s very reasonable but probably a few weeks out. If interested let me know and I’ll text you his contact. Downfall, he’s probably 45min west of br.
