Looking at finding a used Ranger or Skeeter in the 16k-20k price range. Any tips on what dangers to be on the lookout for? How many hours on the motor are to many? Any info would be appreciated. My worst fear is dropping 20k on a used boat and needing a power head by end of summer.

That is certainly a risk. In that range you will be looking at a 2000-2008 skeeter depending on the model. I sold my 2008 zx190 with roughly 290 hours for $19k earlier this year. Go to bassboatcentral’s boats for sale page and get after it. Also, skeeter and ranger both have a boats for sale Facebook page. Good luck.

Go to Bass Boat Central; there are tons for sale. Do a compression test and look over all of the maintenance records before you buy.

Had no idea about the Ranger and Skeeter Facebook page. Thanks!

You are effectively buying the motors at this point.

I fish the small cypress lakes and the Ouachita river here in South AR. I don’t need anything bigger than a 18’ with a 150 on it. Was hoping to find a decent one for around 18k. Just worried about buying a used boat but can’t justify dropping 40k on a new one.

My dad bought a used 2002 Triton TR-20 with a 2003 225 Mercury EFI for $17k a few years ago and it was a great boat. He sold it last year because we weren't using it enough to justify letting it sit up in the shed.

Just as long as the compression test looks good and the foot has got good looking oil in it you should be alright. Those are the two main things I would look at other than just checking the hull very thoroughly for cracks.

Mercury EFI's and Yamaha VMAX HPDI's are gonna be the most reliable motors you'll find on boats from the years that are gonna be in your price range.

You don't want a 150 on an 18 footer; 90 tops

Why? So it'll feel under-powered and take forever to plane out? No thanks. I know more people than I can count on my hands with 18' and 19' bass boats with 150's and 175's on them.

A 150 is prettymuch standard for that length, nitro doesn’t even offer anything less on a z18.

It actually has a new powerhead. 3 hours I think.

To the OB, I would look hard at the zx190. I loved my boat just needed something bigger for toledo bend.

Maybe if it were aluminum.

I have a Ranger 361V (17’10”) with a 175.

ETA: I see you have addressed this already. Carry on.

Only thing I'd add is that I think a 115 is probably sufficient for an 18 footer....It won't do 70, but it'll do enough, and you should be able to get a newer (maybe even brand new) engine with maybe some warranty remaining to give you some peace of mind.
