Long Range Scope Recommendations for 338 Lapua

I am just curious if anyone has recommendations on a scope capable of 1000 yards and maybe around $1000. I am also hoping that it will have some type of "bullet drop compensation" feature. I have read some about the Vortex Viper PST, which seems to fit and is only $1,042. Any information would be appreciated. Thanks to everyone in advance.

I would look into Nightforce optics if you are gonna get in the long range game but prep thy anus, they are not cheap.

Yeah those things are astronomical. I don't compete or anything, so I really just bought the gun for fun. I think I may bring it to Wyoming in the fall for an Elk hunt, but I'm not sure yet. I don't really need the absolute best, so I am looking for something between $1000 and $1500.

It wont be good. Why have a 338 with a scope that will limit it? I suggest you save up more money and get a quality scope.

How much experience do you have with this stuff? Unless you have to have something new, Id look at some of the other forums and pick up a used scope. Most of these guys dont take their guns out the safe and if they do its straight to the bench.
For around a $1000, just off the top of my head.
Burris XTR2 5-25 with H59 reticle
Bushnell HDMR can be had used for that price.
Vortex Viper PST 5-25x
You dont really need more than a fixed 10x to get to 1000, but it sure helps.

The Vortex Viper PST 5-25X is the one that I have been looking at. Do you believe that this will be ok or will the quality be pretty low?

I will spend the money if needed, but I was going to avoid it if the others would suffice. I am very inexperienced with the long range game, but I have read several great reviews concerning the Vortex that I mentioned. Just wanted to see if anyone here had experience with these types of scopes.

I don't want to poor mouth your budget, but we're talking about extremely high capabilities at this point. Everything has to be almost perfect to make 1000, 1200 yard shots.
Vortex (including your Viper PST) and Meopta are going to have some choices that might be in the ball park.
Burris XTR II and Weaver 4-20x50 (30mm, might be an issue mouting to a 338 - just not sure) are a couple of others, if you want some more options, but these are more tactical/target scopes than hunting if that matters to you.

I have seen Swarovski scopes used for your price point if you look long enough. I use a 6.5 Creed for 1200 and under and I use a Swaro z-5 for it and have been very happy.
For shots beyond that I use a .375 and have a Khales on it.
I think a vortex or the Meopta isn't a bad option for your budget. One thing about good glass, it's a commodity meaning you could start with one and if you don't like it after a period of time you can always sell it and upgrade.

Its about middle of the road. Quality is fine. If you could bump it up to about $1500, Id go with a Bushnell DMR2 3.5-21 or Bushnell LRHS or LRTS 4.5-18x. Should be able to find those for cheaper than $1500 though.
Im partial to Bushnell, they stepped it up a few years ago and their upper end scopes are built like tanks.

At $4 to $5 a round, it is going to be an expensive learning curve. I think the vortex scope you’re looking at should suffice. There are people making long shots with 4-16x. Make sure it has a zero feature for your turrets. Also, look into if you want a MOA or MRAD reticle. MOA hashes are around 1” at 100 yards and MRAD will be around 3.6” at 100 yards. Everyone has preference on which one is easier to read/range/calculate. Definitely read up before you make your decision.

My budget can definitely change, I just wanted to know if the quality difference was that great between the $1000 and $3000 options. I own a $500 scope that is just as good as my $1200 scope on my 300 win mag. Price is much different, but the quality isn't. Just thought I would ask. As a beginner, it sounds like I should just spend about $1500- $2000 and upgrade later if I feel it is needed. No competitions for me. It is just for fun and maybe an occasional Elk/ Nilgai hunt.

Disregard Bushnell. Will have to go to the SCR-MOA reticle in Burris. Vortex should have an MOA option as well.
Guess we should have asked this first. Is this gun primarily a hunting rifle and needs to light or is it a range gun that you might take hunting?

The few times that I actually use it will probably be hunting. I just didn't want to limit the capabilities too much.

There are some really good options thrown out already for some scopes in the price point you listed if this rifle is going to be used mostly for hunting. If you decide to get into more long range shooting than hunting, you can always sell it pretty easily (especially if you go with a Swarvo) and upgrade to a more dedicated long range scope. I'm partial to the Nightforce scopes but they aren't cheap and either is ammo for a 338 Lapua.

Yes. Our range maxes out at 1000 yards, but I have never tried that type of shot. I just bought Ammo at $130 per box.
