Merry Christmas OB.
I am contemplating buying a new deer rifle in the off season. Specifically, a Browning hells canyon x-bolt in 7mm-08. At this point, I would go with a Leupold VX5 HD. I have always had standard duplex reticles on deer rifles, but I’ve been looking at the firedot. A couple questions for those of you who’ve used them:
1.) do you like them?
2.) I assume you can completely turn the firedot off, right?
3.) when the firedot is off, is there a black dot in the middle of the reticle? Or does it look like a standard duplex? The latter would be cooler imo just because of the versatility.

I have the older VX-R 4-12x50 on my 6.5 Grendel. It has a side button for brightness settings. I think this one has been discontinued but I like it.

Cool. I’m looking at the 3-15x44 with the standard duplex with firedot. You can turn yours completely off?
Posted on 12/25/20 at 8:21 am to bluemoons
Yes, but I think it also turns off on it's own after no use and will turn back on after you move the rifle. Sorry, I haven't shot this in over a year.

I have the 1.5-4x on my 5.56 AR. It’s a standard reticle with the dot off, but the dot is a very faint green when off, not completely black. I like it for that rifle because with the magnification all the way down and dot on, it serves like a red dot. Or I can go up to 4x if I wanna reach out and touch something.

I have 2 VXR patrols with the fire dot. I really like mine.

Love the firedot for low light conditions. When its off, it looks like a regular duplex. You can adjust brightness, and it turns off after 5(?) minutes of no movement but turns on when the rifle is moved again. You wont need it for 99% of the time, but when u need it, it's there.

3 of my buddies have the vx-5 in that mag with the firedot. I want one but I'm cheap and kill shite with a vortex. But this is what I would buy if I spent some money on a scope

Cool. Appreciate it. This is the info I was looking for. I’m also hoping it’ll help me aim smaller which is something I’ve always struggled a bit with in shooting with a duplex.

I’ve never spent the kind of money contemplated in my OP on a deer rifle, but the more I’ve wanted a 7mm-08 for awhile and I really like that x bolt. I have heard it shoots really well.

I have a VX-5 HD 3-15x56 on my 28 nosler. I like the firedot but I rarely actually use it. You need to have the brightness up when it’s brighter outside and as it starts getting dark in the evening if you don’t turn it down, the dot will wash the whole scope out. So then you’re moving around in the stand trying to look through the scope to adjust the dot. I also have a Trijicon accupoint and the dot is much more functional in that scope.
When the firedot is off, it’s just a regular duplex. I didn’t know it turned off after 5 minutes of sitting still but that’s pretty cool.
I do really love the scope, but I could live without the firedot. The CDS however, is definitely worth it.

Thanks for your input. Could you give me some practical insight as to how the CDS actually works? Do you have to get a new CDS every time you switch bullet type? Is that something you can do on your own, or only through Leupold? Also, do you really think it’s worth it on a rifle where 90% of my shots would be inside 200yd?
This is all new to me. My nicest riflescope currently is an old Pentax lightseeker.

I have a 2x7 x33 Firedot on a .308.I really like mine,it’s my afternoon rifle. The main value for me is when a black hog comes out late.I missed a couple before I got it because I couldn’t see the crosshairs against the black body.
Also killed quite a few hogs at night under a green feeder light, red dot showed up well.
For deer during legal shooting hours it’s really not necessary.

I got one in VX6. As others said, when you turn it off it is a regular scope. I absolutely love it. When the sun starts going down it can be harder to pickup the black crosshairs on a brown body in the shadows. That red dot makes it a breeze.
But everyone has a preference, this is just mine. I like a simple bold reticle on a gulf south deer hunting rifle. In open pastors with longer shots or mid west, I know the scope would still be great but I don’t know if something would be better.
That said, the glass is great and the scope is very well made. Wouldn’t hesitate to buy again. I do want to check out the Tract scopes though. Seem like an amazing value.

1). I LOVE MINE!
2). Yes
3). When the fire dot is off, all you see is the reticles.
You will LOVE it!

I love mine and my son shot really good with it in early and late light. I wouldn't buy a scope with out it.

CDS wouldn’t be practical inside of 200 yards. Most of my shots are relatively close but I like the CDS if I hunt a pipeline or when I hunt open fields in Missouri. When you buy the scope leupold gives you one free dial. Every dial after that is $80. You send them your bullet, the FPS, altitude, temperature, BC and zero distance and they send you a dial built for you. My zero distance is 100 so my dial starts at 1. 2 is 200, 3 is 300 and so on. Mine goes to 1,350.
I’ve shot it out to 450 yards and it was good. I want to shoot it farther than that, I just don’t have anywhere to do it.

I'm not trying to poopoo on your choice but why spend that kind of money on a 7mm-08. It's a great deer caliber but you can get a great rifle in 7mm-08 for half that price. I have an A bolt 308 that is one of the most accurate rifles I have ever owned.

Honestly it’s just a want. I shot the x bolt hells canyon in .308. Loved how the gun shot, felt, and looked. I’ve been wanting a 7mm-08 for a long time just to have an effective, light recoil deer rifle that I liked and wanted to shoot a lot. I am considering the Bergara B14 as well but have not shot the rifle.

Nothing wrong with that.
